Can you all help me choose a low efficiency speaker for my new Ghia? Im waiting for my new Ghia 1x10 combo so I'm starting to think about a 12" speaker for my Z convertible cab. I'll be running the Ghia through that when home. Currently I have a G12H30 in there but I've heard how loud a 100dB V30 was with a Ghia. I have to drop it down from there.
I've been looking at the Creamback 65, Greenback and some of the low efficiency Weber Alnicos. Would the former two bring more Marshall out of the amp and the Webers more Vox?
Thanks!

The Heritage Greenback is my favorite with the Ghia

As for the Webers...it depends on which one you buy.
Yes, the G12H is a loud speaker.
The Greenback is 98db The creamback is 97db The heritage greenback is 96db, but it's expensive. The Celestion EVH is the same speaker as the Heritage greenback, but with that vanhalen magnet cover. But it's less expensive.
And yes, anything greenback or clone will bring out more Marshall tones than that awful G12H.
Personally, I'd cruise craigslist or Ebay for a used greenback. Get one cheap, see if you like the efficiency and tone. (and broken in) Then decide if you want to pursue tweaking for a creamback or heritage greenback.

Great idea. I'll look for a used speaker.
I prefer an open back cab. Greenbacks always seem in closed backs. Do they lose bass definition out the back? Does the Creamback handle that better?

You could try a WGS Vet 10.

I've been using greenbacks and creambacks in openbacks for years now. Yes, it's different than a closed back. A greenback may get a little floppy at high volumes in an openback. But that's neither good nor bad. Some may like the tone. But I don't think a Ghia is going to push it that much.

Ghia 1x10 combo, you said? Put a G10 Greenback in there, man! All day. Sounds great, made for the 'Ghia, and it's a "quiet" speaker (relatively speaking, of course, because the 'Ghia isn't exactly a quiet amp).
But on the 12" side of things... try though I may, I cannot find a better speaker in my collection than the Weber 30 W alnico Blue Dog for my older 'Ghia head. Sounds fantastic with every guitar, and on every amp setting. Bonus: it's also a "quiet-ish" speaker.

John, can you describe the tone difference between the Greenback and Creamback with the Ghia? I'm looking for warm, balanced eq, smooth breakup.

I've never used either with the Ghia. I always use a 10" gold with my Ghia because of the type of music I play. (modern country) But I do have a decent amount of experience with the greenback/creamback in general.
The creamback at 65 watts is going to barely flinch at the 18 watts of the Ghia...so not as much breakup. and in general, those two speakers are intended to sound identical. I've heard some others say the Creamback has slightly more bass, but I could not confirm that. (That's why I suggested you go with a cheaply available greenback)

I can't get a fix on how they differ.

Mark, have you compared the Weber Silver Bell to the Blue Dog? I can't get a fix on how they differ. At one point, yes I did have the opportunity to A/B a Silver Bell (30 W ceramic) vs. the Blue Dog (30 W AlNiCo). Now, of course everybody's ears are different—and it's one ceramic vs. one alnico—but... I found the Silver Bell to be a little weak in the lows and not as full-sounding as the Blue Dog. (Strange, I know, because everybody says the Blue has great highs and the Silver has great lows! But again, this is what my ears were telling me.) I've also been able to do a similar comparison of those 2 speakers in the 10" version, and largely came to the same result. Go figure.
