Hi all,
Okay, I posted the other day about hearing the DB-4 head and how blown away I was by how this amp really roared when cranked up.
With that in mind . . . . . .
Go back two years ago at Mini Zfest at Mike's place. Dr Z and his grandson Carmen where there (maybe this is 3 years ago?). The Doc brough along a little something for us to play with that a lot of us were pretty blown away by. It was a 4 EL-84 fire breather and Doc wouldn't talk much more about it other than saying it was something they were playing with.
I recall we hooked this amp up to a 1x12 with a Creamback in it and plugged in Mike's '73 Les Paul. I played it for a bit and then a couple of other played it, some Rush and other great rock tunes were played and it sounded fantastic. Someone called it Darth Vadar because it was black and sounded killer.
Could this have been an early version of the DB-4??? The DB-4 has much more head room than the Vadar but when cranked . . . . .
Thoughts anyone??
Doc??
I don't want to scare anyone from the DB-4 thinking its a high gain amp so please wait for the demo's before you make up your mind. The 2x12 combo I played through with Celestian Blues sounded much different than the 2x12 Zbest so this amp has some real potential to be very versitile and adjustable depending on what you hook up to it.
This amp is going to be another Dr Z "must have"
Todd

I remember "Darth Vader" all too well! (He was plugged into my Avatar 1x12 w/Creamback, brand new at the time.) Sounded sweet.
Just for reference, Darth had: Volume, Drive, Tone, and Master; there was also some sort of Hi/Lo switch on there, too. (I may have taken a picture or two that day, however I don't feel right sharing a Z-prototype picture on the internet.) I also recall Doc saying that it was one of his lead tech's concoctions, and that it was being run so hot internally that it was darn near unstable.
That said, is any of this going to prevent me from wanting a DB4? Absolutely not...

I remember what you are talking about. I think it was Don at the shop. That amp really screamed and sounded amazing thru your cab. We might have broken in that speaker that day!

Sure did, Todd! I'm willing to bet that Celestion sold a few more Creambacks to some guys who were there because of it, too.
