I saw this Route 66 on Craigslist. It has a Master volume installed on the back of it that the seller calls the Skip Z circuit. Is that a Dr. Z mod or something else?

I've never heard of a "Skip Z" mod - and I think if the good Dr chose to do it, it would not have a name like that.

That is what I thought, but the Z in the name of this unknown to me "circuit" gave me pause.

A quick email to the shop will clear anything up. I think the doc has done a few MV mods to Mazarati's for the owners, but his initials may be signed on the chassis somewhere.

Skip Z had his own circuit business. He did VVR and power scaling mods. He went out of business late 2015 or so.

^ Yeah, what he said.
There's been talk of a variable-voltage/power-scaling type "master volume" mod to the Route 66. Somebody here on the forum tried it out; I haven't heard much about it since. It definitely wasn't something Doc did, though.

Definitely doesn't look, like any of MV knobs that has put on my amps. Doc had looked at the VVR Concept, and didn't like it on his amps.

DC here! I would guess that when the good Doc is finished with a design of his amps - with the sound he was aiming for. Then he would not recommend a mod to his designs. In Route66 the output transformer was specificly designed to work with the KT66 tubes. To change the the plate voltage idle current, bias and what not - etc etc that this type of mods do would likely not make the amp work like Doc designed it to do. Any kind of tube has a specific range of plate voltage, idle current, plate dissipation, bias range that the tube was meant to work with and handle. Changing these parameters out of bounds is usually not recommended ( of course you might like the sound you get out of the amp any way )

Cheers: Dixiechicken That is what I thought. I had someone local who was interested in trading this amp for one of my guitars that I have for trade on this forum and on Reverb. I thought, maybe, I could trade this amp for a Maz 38. A non - Z mod would kill that idea, which is not effectively dead. Thanks for your help guys. I did write Dr. Z, but I should have waited to hear from you guys.
