I know it's a little early so this question is more towards Doc than anyone else. But everyone feel free to chime in. So Doc, can you tell us where the headroom sits compared to some of your other designs? I watched Brad's demo and of course the tone was great but I really couldn't tell much about the headroom and how loud he was actually playing. Is the DB4 primarily meant to be on the gainier side of things or does it have a fair amount of cleans as well?

When Brad said here is the clean tone...he sounded pretty dirty. Felt like a dirty amp to me from his demo...squishy and fuzz like.

Yea I didn't really hear 'cleans' so to speak. I did notice that his volume was around noonish, which on my previous Zwreck combo would have been breaking up a bit too. And loud at that point too!

My take when he said "clean" was that he meant no pedals...then he clicked the Wampler on. It had some serious balls and grit before he clicked the pedal...he had if pretty hot. He doesn't play quietly

He doesn't play quietly No, he does not... that's for sure. In fact, Brad's the guy who has no need for the half-power switch on his personal DB4. He also famously cranked a StangRay full-up (on Doc's DVD) and remarked, "It's a little loud in here." Gee, ya think?!? (No, I'm not jealous.)

I just watched the video. I have never seen Brad up close playing guitar. I didn't realize until this very minute that he is a "I don't use my pinky much" kind of player. That just amazes me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Lol. I just never was able to get mine to do what I wanted it to do. I use it for country bends but never on any runs.

Well, I CAN and Do use my pinky, BUT I can't do what he does! That is what I find utterly jaw-dropping!

Oh he uses it plenty when he plays the jazzier type stuff. It really just depends on what he's playing. Check out his Zwreck demo for a little sample. He still doesn't use it a lot in that video. Mostly toward the end.

So just a little update. I asked the guys at Humbucker about the headroom on the DB4. They contacted Dr Z and Jake from Humbucker sent me this reply back. They have since added this to the description on their website as well.
"How does it compare to the Z-Wreck? Great question! First of all, this amp is in no way designed to replace the Z-Wreck. Quite the contrary, actually. Brad wanted an amp to supplement the Z-Wreck, not to take the place of it. The DB4 is not as brilliant and stark as the Z-Wreck, and is definitely warmer, darker, and thicker, so because of that it's not that bright sound you associate with a Vox. By design, the breakup comes on a bit earlier than the Z-Wreck. It's a little more "rock-n-roll" you could say."

This is very intriguing! I kinda thought the amp in Brad's demo sounded pretty aggressive/chunky & almost dark on the high-end (the only slightly StangRay-ish setting was on the brightest click, but not really), and not jangly at all. I perceive it fitting into the spectrum this way:
Clean, clean, clean <----------> Practically everything <----------> Darker, warmer, crunchier StangRay Z-Wreck DB4
I have always--and still do--wanted a StangRay... it's simply the most beautiful cleans ever. But I suspect this DB4 (much cheaper & more accessible than the 'Wreck, plus a 1/2-power switch) will take my focus away from wanting a Z-Wreck down the road; especially if I can get StangRay cleans + DB4 grind.

Shipped a 1x12 combo to Dave Baker. Expect an excellent demo soon. I asked Dave to demonstrate the DB 4 and it's tones, then compare it to his Z Wreck head in the video. So the demo will contain both amps and should help answer the tonal questions.

I was going to make some comments but the video from Dave will do far more than my explanation of anything

So, as I hear it, that Tone control sounded more like a 5 position Gain switch - I know things got darker as he went clockwise, but they also sounded grittier..........Is that just my ears?

Pete I think it's more the speakers that you listened to the demo on. If you have any HiFi type speakers to play it on you'll hear more of what it sounds like in the room. Z

Lol....that's what I hear too Pete ! Maybe Brad is just hitting the strings harder or the Blues are just working a little harder the farther up the switch he goes. That's actually one of the things I like about the demo! Neat sounding amp.

Did what the Doc said, and it's just as gritty at all the settings, but I think my ears LIKE the grit better with a fuller tone! That amp has one helluva good tone - wow!

It would be interesting to hear it going through a Z-Wreck cab with the Gold/Blue combination too.

Howdy,
Based on the Brad Paisly clip and what I've managed to read, the new DB-4 is more in the JTM 45 camp. Keep the reviews coming.
