Years ago I was asked to turn down a couple of times. I finally either put amp on standby or turned volume all the way off (my old mind can't remember). I acted like I was playing, anyway, I was told "that is much better." Doesn't speak to well for my guitar playing. The band and I got a good laugh out of that one. I guess when you can't hear the guitar at all you've got the volume about right. The really funny thing was the vocals would take your head off.

When "asked" to turn down, I always consult the Guitarist Union Manual, page 7, and follow directions. I consult this page because sound tech's are notorious for asking the wrong question when it comes to guitar players volume.

No, but you're close. We had a choir director in charge of sound.

We were doing a show at a larger venue a few years back with a house sound guy who was a real jerk. We had plenty of time to sound check before the show. Now, this sound guy pissed off our drummer somehow. His response? Our drummer unplugged the drum mics to drive the guy crazy, thinking it would take him a while to track down why he wasn't getting any signal to the board. This was a big room than needed drums in the FOH mix. The sound guys response? That sounds a lot better!"
Lesson learned: don't trust sound guys you don't know.

Ha! This reminds me of a couple instances when I was asked to turn down in the orchestra pit so I tuned everything off and faked it the whole night. The music director shook my hand and said I was wonderful. Caused a little bit of friction in the band because I got paid for literally doing nothing as well as questioning the credentials of the MD.

I got told to turn down in Guitar Center...(!) I thought I was being polite, too.
