I was wondering if anyone is using the Dr Z Z-12 speaker with your Maz 18? If so what are your thought? How does it sound clean and when over driven. I am presently using a Creamback in my Z cab 1 X 12. I have tried a Vintage 30 and a Heritage 30. Looking to maybe get one and try it out. Thanks all.

I just bought a Z-12 speaker to go into a cab I have sitting around. I'll let you know as soon as I install it (hopefully this weekend). I have a maz 18 nr.

I have one in my Maz 18. It's my favorite speaker to pair with the Maz aside from Doc's 2x10 cabinet. Excellent both clean and overdriven. Plus, it's under 100db so you can drive the amp a little bit harder. At $89 a pop, it's a tremendous bargain.

I got a Z-12 speaker for Christmas to use primarily with my EZG and a 1x12 Z cab and then maybe my Maz Sr reverb 1x12 combo if it didn't work out with the EZG. I think that the speaker sounds very good clean and over driven with both amps. I originally was running both amps though the Z 1x12 cab, but have since move my EZG on. Though I have been kind of thinking that I should not have. Anyway, after the EZG moved on, I loaded the Z-12 speaker into the full size Maz Sr 1x12 combo cab and really like the tones I am getting out of it. As mentioned early, the inefficient speaker allows you to turn up the amp some more which is nice; turn the master up higher. I have since acquired a studio sized 1x12 cab and moved amp and speaker into it and everything still sounds great. I played some recorded bass lines though the speaker for a couple of hours after I first got it to try to break it in a little. The tones remind me a little bit of my Celestion G12M-65 creamback, but there is a difference in tone to me overall. I thought that my Maz Sr sounded fine with my creamback, but I preferred the stock G12H between those two speakers. I like the Z-12 better than both of those speakers with my Maz and it seems like a good match between amp and speaker. You should hear similar results with your Maz Jr I would think. I was really digging my overdriven tone at a band practice a little while ago and then I remembered that I swapped out the G12H-30 that I had been using for the new Z-12 speaker.

I own a Z-12 and until recently had a Maz 18 studio combo. Never tried pairing them, but thought about it and wondered the same thing. If I had to guess, I think it might be a good match: the Z-12 is a slightly darker speaker than a lot of Celestions, it breaks up fairly early and at 97(?)dB it's not super loud, as Frank points out, above. Might smooth out the Maz's high end a bit, and yeah, let you crank the Master a bit more than a more efficient speaker might. Worth a try, for the price.

So I installed the z12 speaker in my existing speaker cab. The speaker I replaced was an Eminence Lady Luck (epiphone stock). It was very loose on the low end and slightly muffled on the high end, but did have some sparkle if I eq'd things correctly.
The z12 was night and day! It is much louder than the previous speaker and has an enormous amount of clarity! This cab is now my go to cab for rehearsal and small venues where I don't feel like lugging my [heavy] zbest 2x12 cab. I don't have much else to say except that this speaker sounds fantastic and I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a better paring for a maz 18. If you're looking for a vintage sound then you're probably looking at a different speaker.
You simply can't go wrong with the z12.

It's great with the Therapy, too! I had mixed results with the Monza, but I may give it another shot one of these days...

I'm loving it with the MAZ and even more with my EZG.

Reviving this old topic. I’m on the hunt for a replacement speaker for the g12h30 in my Maz. For those of you using the Z 12 how does it compare to the g12h30. From what I’m reading; quieter, darker, a little more even not as much low end. Is this a fair assessment? Maybe make the Maz sound a little more “fendery”. Any help would be great. I recently tried a WGS Reaper HP 55hz and that was just way to dark and felt a little “flat” compared to the G12H30. Just looking to tame the presence a bit allowing me to creep that cut knob up a bit further. Thanks

I like the Z 12 with the Maz. I also liked the Reaper HP. Lately though, I'm using the Celestion 65 watt Creamback and like it a lot too.

I've had the Z-12 in Z cab 1/12 cab; for about two years. Had Celestion gold in there before that. The only comparison i can offer is the Z12 is not as bright as the Alnico Gold was, and my Maz is an NR Head with the 1/12 cab. Everything about the crunch, drive and overall tone I get is where I need to be. I play with Volume at 11-12:30 depending on song list and master about 11:30 or so. Treble is at 9, mid and base are 11 and 11 respectively. Play p-90s which are somewhat bright. it is a warmer speaker and breaks up nicely. Good luck with your search.
