I'm looking for some suggestions on what I can use to get an earlier break-up (crunch, distortion, etc.) on my Stang Ray without sacrificing that wonderful tone. Sometimes I play the animal clubs (Moose, Eagles, etc.) and volume is always an issue. I know I can use an Air Brake but I'm wondering if I can accomplish the same thing with a tube change. Thanks in advance for the help.
Modification 4/2/08: Let me clarify what I'm talking about... I'm not looking for Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC type distortion. I'm looking for just al little "hair" around the note. Just enough to let it sing a little.

You can change your rectifier to a 5R4GYB , that gives the amp a little more sag and cut s the output wattage by about 6 to 8watts and this allows you to run the volume alittle higher. As good as the air brake is,I don't care for it as it seems to choke the amp and take away from it's tone!

Yeah, the rectifier change is a good idea. You can also drive the input with a boost - I've been able to get quite a lot of nice distortion that way, but without an Airbrake it is going to get louder.

A 5V4 rectifier will also work. After that what you need is an inefficient cab. But I really think the Ray is not an amp to use for distortion.

Billy's got something there. Added Stang Ray distortion at lower volumes comes from the RXJr.

5R4GYB Rec. and a single Greenback are a great combination to reach your goal, will get you surprisingly close to the RXJr arena Steve mentioned above.

Hi Funk, Definitely check and see which EF86 you have. A good NOS EF86 will be a much higher-gain tube as a rule. If your amp came with a Sovtek or JJ, you've probably lost about 30% of the gain right from the outset. From what I've read, that's the average amount of gain you're missing with a new production tube. If your amp has a Dario or some sweet NOS tube, you're probably not going to realize much more from your tubes.
Personally, I'm all about using the Ray for it's clean tone. I use other amps for gain.
Good Luck, Brad

We only ship the Stangrays with NOS EF86 tubes! Either a Dario or an AEL.

Using the Hi input will certainly yield more "hair" than the low input.
