That the Ray doesn't get much louder past 10-11 o'clock? It just gets thicker and adds a bit more hair to the notes. Maybe that's the Blues breaking up. I just experienced it this weekend over at a friends house who by the way is looking for a Ray now as well ;D
Oh, and I tried a Philips and a GE NOS Rectifier. The Philips is still in there, a mucho improvement over the JJ Rectifier that was in it before.

Yeah... I noticed that, but mine is more like 12:30 - 1:00. Still VERY LOUD though!

Yeah... I noticed that, but mine is more like 12:30 - 1:00. Still VERY LOUD though! Ya know, it may have been the 11-noon area. I was pretty shocked when I took the volume knob from 0-10 and heard the drastic change in tone, it was the first thing that jumped out at me, not volume. Although, it's a loud amp! LOL

I played a gig without an attenuator on it a couple of weekends ago and I only had the volume around 10:00 and it was a loud SOG (son of a gun). But yes, I have noticed that anywhere past 11:00-ish it just gets thicker and meatier.

If I can get mine to 10/ 11:00 I'm doing good, normally it stays at 9:00. Last year I played an outdoor festival on a big stage and got the volume up to 10:00, and after the first song Rockstok was telling me to angle my cab away from him it was so loud! Loudness is not the problem, getting it to cut like a Maz is more of a challenge.

I like it too. I bought the Ray for the big, chimey sound associated with the open back cab with Blues but I'm glad it rocks with a Z-Best too. Wonder how it would sound with a Silver Bell/Blue Dog combo in a Z-Best? Hmmmm............

Curt you've had a Rati' and now a Ray. What's the main differences in the cleans between the two amps. I've heard the cleans in the Rati' are outstanding as well. Obviously the EF86 makes a difference tone as well as the addition of a cut knob in the circuit. Would you say the Rati would be closer to a AC30 Tob Boost model as opposed to the Rays' tones which are supposed to be like a pre top boost AC30?

I may be able to answer that as well, I have both amps in my music room right now. The Rati is less brite on the top end and has a stronger mid range focus. It stays tighter in the low end as well, but doesn't have as much lows. I actually like the Rati better than the Ray for rock when pushed with a pedal or two, but I like the Ray's cleans better. Both amps are pretty interchangable, but each has it's strong point too. * Ray - More highs on tap, more low end on tap, more AC30 in tone. Can chime with the best of them. * Rati - More mid-range and a tighter, but less bottom end. More of a Marshall meets AC30 tone than straight AC30. Not too much chime on tap. * Both - GREAT cleans, but the ray has more "chime" on tap where the Rati has more mids. If I've missed something or have it all wrong, someone chime in.

I concur with Jason above.
For me, the 'Ray is a better amp.

+1 karma for you there Jason. I've actually spent a little bit of time recently checking out some of your posts on the Rati' and Ray' of recent as well as your soundbytes on your website. Loved the cleans of the Rati' but also loved the blues side of the Ray and your version of "Yellow Ledbetter". I was really keen for the the KT45 for a while as a big clean amp but have had send thoughts because of its huge volume. I'm really in two minds as to which way to go now. Rati or Ray? I also have a Maz Invasion(Sr), Ghia and Z-28. What are your thoughts guys? Theres a real nice one with 2x12 blues sittin' on the dock of the bay' right now. ;D cgi.ebay.com/Dr-Z-Stang-Ray-2x12-combo-w-Celestion-Blue-speakers_W0QQitemZ300198076369QQihZ020QQcategoryZ10171QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'd definitely prefer to take my chances with the wildlife out the back of my place (even though I did find a dead water dragon about 4 foot long in my pond yesterday that got mangled by some feral cat) rather than what my wife and I encountered in Thailand. Check out this freaky looking creature. The iguana is pretty interesting too! ;D I'm still working on getting a Stangray but theres not a lot of funds left after our honeymoon. That one with the 2 celestion blues is a killer

Jason's right, it's just got more chime than a Rati. I like the Mazerati but I don't consider it to be a "clean" amp like the Ray.

I was actually in the street (Bangor road) Phuket,Thailand. Some dude comes up to me and put this Iguana on me and before I knew what was going on was taking photos of me and asking me to give him money! The creature behind me is what is loosely referred to as a "Lady-Boy." I must admit though that my wife and I didn't see a whole lot of "ladies" that night.

Dude, that's terrifying. Oh, by the way. You need a Ray! No sh#t mate! It even had the hide to ask my wife for some money as she was taking my picture and got real dirty when we laughed, shook our heads and told them where to get off. CRIKEY!!! That's the kind of wildlife that even Steve Irwin would have been wary of. ;D Thanks for your word up on the ray by the way, I really can't decide between the rati' and the ray' but I'm leaning towards the ray'
