For those of you who have compared both, how would you describe the difference in sound between the Stang Ray with 1 12" Gold and the Stang Ray with 2 12" Blues? Does it put out the same volume? How does the tone compare? Warmth? Chime? Breakup? etc?

I think the Ray shines with 2 speakers, that said, my fav single 12 is the Tone Tubby ceramic.
nice and flat, no spikes and @ 97dB get's the tubes workin' more with out peeling your face off.

They are very comparable, but slightly different at the same time. The Golds give up a tiny bit of top end, and add a bit firmer bottom end. The lower to upper mids are almost identical, as is the sensitivity. With my Stingray I end up running the cut perhaps a tenth of a turn higher, and there is more than enough power to make up for any loss from going down to one speaker vs. two (although I don't recall changing the setting on my airbrake at all when I went to the single Gold).
FYI I just tried my new Alnico Tone Tubby on the Stingray (the Tone Tubby is installed in my Maz Jr Combo cab) and it too is a great sounding speaker with the 'ray. A bit flatter (not as much pronounced mids) and maybe the top end is slightly different, but all in all a good sounding speaker with the 'ray. I also tried the Stingray on the Z-Best and I can see why Curt likes that so much - I would have thought I wouldn't care for it, but I could gig that setup very easily.
If tone is the absolute driver, the Blues are hard to beat, especially if you like that bag-o-glass top end they give. If you want pretty much that sound but more portable, you can't go wrong with a single Gold, and they sound great too.

I run my Stingray through a convertible with a Gold. What a sound.
But then I went to Phil's house and ran it through his Z open back with 2 C Blues. Nothing compares to that. Beautiful, beautiful sound.
Now, when I went to see Brad Paisley, I looked at the back of his amps, and he had his Stingray going through a Z open back with 2 Golds in it. That cabinet is magical.

Two speakers in an open back cab is the ticket, whether it be Blue or Gold. The Golds have a little more lower mid thrust, the Blues a little more articulation.

I like the Weber (alnico) Blue - Silver bell combination......... You get the great blue tone, plus the added low end of the silver (and a speaker with less breakup). Very magical combination if you ask me, but I'd love to try a Gold & (50wt weber) Blue together.

Ray and 2x12 Blues or Golds open cab seem to be give the best tone,IMO.

I played a Ray 1X12 combo with a Gold and wasn't into it at all. It was too beamy for me and nothing seemed "right" to me. The low end was good, real good, but I couldn't dial in the chime to where I was comfy. I liked the speaker, but not the amp/speaker pairing.
Jump ahead 3 months later and I try richeray's Stingray 2X12 combo with Blues in it. Now THAT was the sound I was looking for! Nice chime on top, smooth mids and solid low end. And there were 2 things I LOVED about the 2X12 with Blues: 1.) The way those 2 speakers interacted in a bigger cab. It just had more of a bloom and harmonic complexity to it than the 1X12. 2.) The way the speakers "moved around" a bit. Those two speakers are perfect for the Ray, you can feel the speakers as well as the rectifier in the amp working together and interact together that I can only compare to a Ghia and a single Alnico Blue. It's simply the coolest feeling and sound in the world.
So, I'd have to agree with most everyone else. The Ray plus a 2X12 cab is the way to go. I think if ya want the traditional Vox tones from the Ray go with a 2X12 open back cab with Alnico Blues.

I can't comment on a Ray with a single anything, or a Ray combo..... but 2 12 alnico blue I built for myself is great, you could classify it as an open cab.
jwr +1 on the Ghia with one blue, seems you and I have a lot of in common when it comes to pleasant sounds/tones (except I'll replace harmonic complexity with "I liked it")..... that sounds not even what I went for when I bought the amp, but it's such a match you can't help but love it.
