Man lately I wish I could get some consistent sets of Eh's...not so much red plating (as much as they use to) but tone...got one set from a different supplier and they sounded dead,no life to them,no bass...different pair sweet clarity, way better... another pair in between the two...
What say you guys about your experiences?

Our ole buddy John recently recommended The Tube Store's high end 7189 tubes. He said he liked em and they were very durable and long lasting. John said these are the stock tube in the Z Wreck ( I think). So i bought a quad. I loaded a pair into my Ghia, and another pair in my Monza, and brothers, the little tubes awakened a pair of sleeping giants..... Pricey, but killer.

I have used lots of different EL84s in my DC30 clone. I probably liked the Ei ones best, but the Shuguang ones were very inexpensive and sounded almost as good as some NOS EL84s I used for a bit. I was less enamored of the EH and again, less with the JJ versions in that amp.
I have the 7189s in my Z-Wreck and it sounds so good, I don't seem to have much interest in finding out if anything would sound better. As I see it, the EL84 I would probably like most for a single coil guitar input usually sounds worse for a humbucker. Not sure if that's universal, but that is certainly how my DC30 clone works, and I have a few humbucker guitars that don't seem perfectly suited to the Z-Wreck.

I loaded a pair into my Ghia, and another pair in my Monza, and brothers, the little tubes awakened a pair of sleeping giants..... Pricey, but killer. I don't come into the tube thread much on this forum. But I saw this. I had an el84 BREAK on me 90 seconds before a high profile gig. Since I was gigging a lot at the time, and my Ghia got most of the gigs, I decided to spring for the expensive but rugged 7189 soviet military tubes. Doc says it's what he puts in the Wreck. They take forever to heat up. (probably 30 seconds vs 10 for JJ's.) I'm not a big tube swapper, but I did notice they had a bit higher headroom and seemed a bit less compressed than the JJs I had. And Doc said the Ghia is much easier on power tubes than most other cathode biased el84 amps. So these should last for years and years. As I see it, the EL84 I would probably like most for a single coil guitar input usually sounds worse for a humbucker. Not sure if that's universal, but that is certainly how my DC30 clone works, and I have a few humbucker guitars that don't seem perfectly suited to the Z-Wreck. I too don't like humbuckers with el84's. The Ghia is much more humbucker friendly than the maz to my ears. I prefer big bottles with humbuckers. Here they are: www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/EL84-6BQ5-Tube-Types/Preferred-Series-7189-Premium-EL84

I've had great luck with TAD EL84 STR's. Bought from KCANOS. Buying tubes from a reputable dealer makes a big difference in longevity.

I put a pair of 7189's in my Ghia-LE. They sound good, I liked the JJ'S that were in the amp better but I wore those out. I'll take the long term reliability of the 7189's over a slightly different tone though, can't stand when my gear fails.

went through tons of EL84's a couple of years ago. Then I broke down and called Willie at NBS Electronics in Denver (I say broke down because he can be a pain in the arse!). He sent me burned in matched sets of JJ's and I haven't had a single failure since I started using his stuff. He just tests the heck out of stuff before he sends it out...

I haven't dealt with him for several years. He can be interesting to say the least. I always just maintained my sense of humor when communicating with him. Say what you will though he sells reliable tubes at fair prices.
