I have a milestone birthday coming up. I was thinking of getting another Z. Do I really need another Z? Who doesn't but to be honest the answer would be no. Another problem is that I am not looking for any specific tone or void to fill, just something to add to the line up. I don't want to spend too much or get something too big. The Carmen Ghia is top of the list, but the Mini Z also seems to fit the bill.
Anyone have both? Any comparisons would be appreciated. I am also posting in the Mini section. Thanks!

I would say the deciding factor between a mini and ghia would be your volume needs. They both will cover clean to crunch, but all else being equal, the ghia will do it at higher volumes. I actually only have a mini myself, and when I find myself gassing for other amps (ghia, monza, z-28, remedy, therapy... the list keeps growing!) I always have to remind myself that I almost always attenuate the mini, even when I'm playing out with my friends.

We have both in my house. My son has a Mini Z 1x10 combo with the newer tranny and a Celestian Gold and I have a Ghia LE with a 1x10 Green back. Given the choice, my son would trade me for my Ghia. The Ghis is slightly thicker sounding, even when running in through the same speakers. The Ghia has a bit more growl to when it when the over drive gets going. Cleans in both are very good. Obviously, the Ghia is louder so you need to decide how much clean head room you need. We've used both amps with bands before and the Mini hung in there but it was wide open and screaming in glorious fasion! my 2 cents, Todd

Thanks guys. Headroom will be the key.

If headroom is key I would go CG. It sounds larger at low volumes to me.

I have both, but you seem to have your answer already.
The Mini is a cool unit, but the CG is such a great amp. Big bodied tone with plenty of oopmh.
Yes, if headroom is the factor CG all the way.

I would get the Ghia. It sounds great cranked up, but I also think it sounds good at lower volumes or attenuated. Get some good tubes and you will be a happy guy. I assume that with the Route and Z28 you have some good speakers laying around.

Thanks for all the responses. I just wanted to be sure and cover all my options. I have a some time before my birthday, enough time for my wife to find a bow for a Ghia!

I wasted no time. I found a 1x12 combo with a Blues speaker on Reverb. A little early for my birthday but I had to strike while the iron was hot!
