I don't have my StangRay here yet, but I've been reading up and on the Z28 somebody mentioned with the bass and treble controls at about 3/4 the Z28 could sing at low volume. Not knowing how alike or different the tone circuits are in the StangRay or Z28, I was wondering if this was the case with the StangRay too! If not maybe one of you guys that has one can try and let back to me...? Thanks in advance.
I've been using a MAx18JR w/Rev along with an Analogman King Of Tone. I wasn't able to try the StangRay with this pedal and was wondering if any of you use a KoT or another clean boost with your rig or does the volume knob on the ax do alright alone?
With another month of waiting ahead of me, I'm sure to think of more mundane questions. Thanks!!

Well I don't have a Z28, but I can tell you the preamps aren't really alike. The Stang Ray features the one knob tone control with an addition of the cut control. So I think you're comparing apples and oranges. As far as singing at low volume goes, I think it depends on how you define "low volume." Do you mean bedroom levels? My Stingray likes a good clean boost. The Blue Jean Blues clip I just posted in the sounds forum was done with the RC Booster. Turning that on can increase the sustain, the gain, the beef - it all depends on your settings. Sorry I can't be more difinitive, but if you have one coming, you'll see...

Like Steve said, the Ray needs a clean boost to get it "singing". I use an RC boost and a BB for yet more gain. It DOES have the best cleans I've ever heard in any amp...it just needs some help getting the drive going.

I have an AnalogMan KoT version 4 and it gets along great with the Stang Ray.

I'm starting to think that layering boosts with the Stang is what it really likes. I'm planning on ordering a ZVEX super-duper two-in-one (that just sounds cool, eh?).
This pedal effectively gives you three footswitchable boost levels. Combined with the two levels in the "comp cut" mode on my fulldrive, I'd have FIVE footswitchable boost levels overall. Overkill, perhaps, but the texture of this amp changes so much with each layer of boost that it's hard to have to many boosts with a Stang Ray--unless you have the gain on all of them cranked to where the tone goes mushy.
As for the tone controls, I'm pretty sure that the Stang's "conjunctive filter" is quite different than the tone stack used in the RT66 and Z-28. Those amps have tone stacks where the bass and treble controls also adjust the GAIN of their respective bands. So they aren't your typical tone controls.
I'd love to have a RT66, but for now, I'm quite happy with all that my Stang does.
