Hi, I have a question: I'm thinking about christmas already and I'd like to get a speaker or speakers for my MAZ-18 JR NR head.
Currently I'm running a celestion vintage 30 1x12 with a no name spkr box; closed back.
My impression of this setup is lots of mid (boxy), highs are a little harsh sometimes and lots of low end on tap( too much for my taste..I have to cut lots of low end or it gets boomy).
I like to play biting blues rock type of stuff; not saturated.
In that past (with another amp) I really like the "3x10" config.
So...here are my questions:
1.) Would I like a 2x10 better? 2.) Which 1x12 would be less "boxy"? 3.) would modding the back to say "2/3 closed back" tame the boxiness?

I really think you would, great punchy , dynamic blues tone, more balanced mids then a V-30 , less low end bloom. If you like 3x10 my 2x10 will be a treat.
2.) Which 1x12 would be less "boxy"?
Hard to get a 1x12 small box not to sound " Too Boxey " actually open back will be a bit more airy not as focused and confined.

Maybe open it up all the way, and add a little damping material. Opening the cab will less the lowend. And damping material will lessen mid phase cancellation , making upper mids more open less brittle.

Oh....straight from Mike Z himself...
Thanks Mike....I figured that I'd like a 2x10 box....and in the mean time I'll take the back off to get by...
Thanks, bob

It's hard to beat a reply and advice from the man himself.
My Maz Sr. came with Celestion G12H, but being the constant tinkerer, I tried a Vintage 30. It sounded just as you described. The G12H went back in and will never come out. It just sounds perfect for the amp. I also have the G12H in my Maz Jr. Both amps are combos though. If you do decide to go open back cab, I suggest the G12H.
