Maybe in the PI spot--I do request balanced triodes for PI tubes, but there's even been suggestions that it's not necessary in guitar amps.

I do it only because of my obsessive nature. I don't think it's at all necessary. I do believe it's better to do it in the PI than not , but I think that unless the 2 sides were way out of whack you probably wouldn't notice.

I thought in cathode biased amps balanced tubes didn't really make a difference and could even be undesirable???

Happy to assist in your neuroticism... I was operating under the pretense that balanced preamp tubes in a cathode biased amp could let some even-ordered harmonics slip through. But hell, what do I know? I just play them.
