I just purchased an Orange AD30TC and retubed it with JJ EL84s and Tung Sol 12ax7s and I feel the clean on the amp is very empty and too brittle along with the 2nd channel. I have the bass at 3 o'clock on both channels and the mid and high around 11-12 o'clock. I play an Eric Johnson strat with it and the guitar has sounded much fuller with a Rivera Quiana with 6L6s I previously used.
I also notice the tone too be too glassy and harsh when I use the volume knob on my guitar to clean up as opposed to the Quiana.
I do not know if I just need to more time tweaking, or if the EL84s are just not for me, as this is my first EL84 amp.
I have been thinking about these amps as well:
Bad Cat Cub II Dr. Z Stangray vs. Mazerati Fender 59 Bassman Victoria Bassman copy Rivera Quiana
I have not had the chance to play any Dr. Z amps, but have heard great things about them. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I played through an orange ad30tc combo, I don't know if yours is a combo, for about three years and was pretty much sold on it until my other guitarist got a Z. I now actually own both a mazerati combo and a stangray combo so I kinda have experience with all of them even the bad cat (which the cub was kinda saggy and weak to me).
The orange is a great amp but the mazzerati is very close to it in my opinion. I fact I sold the orange to get the mazerati. The stang on the other had is something different in that it really sounds 3 dementional.
The thing that I'm just now finding out is how much of a role the right speaker plays in your setup. Whenever I got the stang and started playing it at shows I was really discouraged because of its pearcing brightness at times. but the amp came stock with celetion blues (which I had never played through) and these speakers are just way too bright for the sound I was looking for so I've tryed a few other speakers in the amp and its just really warming things up for me.
Not saying the blues aren't great speakers just not great for me. which also makes me wonder about the orange with other speaker combos, right?
Anyways, I like all the Z amps because they are well built, simply built, reliable, very musical, not too overpriced, and sound better than anything I've heard. You can't go wrong with any of them.
the mazerati is a little darker to me and rounder with more mids. like the Orange The stangray is really sharp, barky, in some ways and smooth and bassy in others. more voxy there is a strange emptiness there but thats the sound of it. listen to bands like Bloc party, REM, radiohead, blur. It really gives you an idea of what this amp sounds like, at least to me anyway.
hope it helps a little. but I do know that the Z stuff is just in another league compared to the orange because of its construction design and lack of cheesy sounding circuit boards which just never have sounded good to me.

Sting/Stang Ray and Blues speakers will cure your tone problems. ;D ;D

If you have ice-picky bright problems with a Z amp try a different guitar. These amps will really show you what the guitar is doing.
