Have we, as a whole, ever come to a consensus on an EL 84 that's dependable, musical, and also affordable? What's up with all this 7189, EL 844, etc, etc, etc? I recently bought an old (2001) Ghia and I know she'll need to be re-tubed once she's here...... Any thoughts, brothers???

www.thetubestore.com/Tubes/EL84-6BQ5-Tube-Types/Preferred-Series-7189-Premium-EL84I splurged for the expensive retube. The same high quality Russian Military tubes the Doc puts in the Wreck. Since this was a gigging amp, it was important to me to spend the extra money for durability. (I had the Ghia burn up a power tube 90 seconds before an important gig....rendering it useless. I didn't bring a backup, and limped through the pa all night.) Have you had a Ghia before? And is your new purchase a head or combo?

I've owned one ghia which was my very first Z about 15 years ago. This one I just bought is identical to that first one. It's a 2001 2 x 10 combo, but I'll probably buy a head cab or have Peter Mather make me one, as I have some Z speaker cabs sitting idle. The amp has its original 2 Z-10 speaker compliment....

The 7189 tubes are good. I've been running the TADs in my early 2k Ghia and really like them. They are definitely worth a try. Also, don't knock JJs. They are probably your cheapest option but they do sound good in the Ghia.

You know... not that I'm one to recommend yet another "brand" of tubes that are simply another factory's tested & re-labelled tubes... BUT I've gotta think that, as complicated as Mesa/Boogie's circuits are, that their tubes would have to conform to some pretty strict standards/tolerances in order to work well in all of their various clean-to-crazy-gain circuits. Anyone got experience/comments with those tubes? I don't even know who their EL84's are made by...
I wonder if any experts could weigh in? And should the Mods move this thread over to the "Amplifier Accessories > Tubes" section?

I'm not a tube expert, and I'm not a Mesa guy, but I agree with Mark on this one. I recently tried a pair of Mesa EL-84 tubes and they are okay. Not too much on the chimey side but they have a nice midrange and good bass. They look very much like they are made of Sovtek components to me. That said, I think I'm going back to JJ for my next order. They seem to be the most stable and reliable, good sounding tube out there right now.

Howdy,
My NOS Sylvanias are STILL going strong! Apparently JJ has conquered it's QC issues, so I'll go with them next time. Sovteks are cheap and rugged; they'll do in a pinch. YMMV.
