I just got back from test driving a Z-Lux head at Emerald City Guitars in Seattle. Yeah, I probably should not have done that. Not sure of the speaker in the 1x12 Z cab as its back was closed, most likely a G12H-30, but it sounded fantastic with my 79 strat. I expected it to sound good from all of the ravs here, but I must say it sounded better than I expected. I really would like to hear it with the new Z speaker. Also tested it out with a Les Paul that they had there and it sounded great with humbucker pups too. Now I am thinking what can I sell. Oh nooooooo

Make a list of your gear and ask yourself what you can live without. Sell what you can, then call your banker or do a Paypal credit deal, lol. You won't regret the purchase for sure. I have been playing mine every day since I got it last week and I don't want to play thru anything else including my MAZ. Right now I am running it stacked on top of a 2x10 open back Z cabinet with the stock Dr Z speakers and it sounds inspirational!

What color was it? Do you always take a personal guitar to demo/test a possible new amp?

The Z-Lux combo sounds incredible with just the Z12 speaker, and I concur with shiner51...it really opens up and shimmers with an additional cab. Terrific tone.

My plan when I order my Z-Lux is to get a head with a open-back 212 cab with the Z-12 Eminence speakers

I kind of go back and forth on whether or not I want a head, less expense and will have cab options, or the full size combo at only 42 lbs, which is appealing. I say full size combo as opposed to a studio size cab offered in other models such as the Maz.

What took you so long Jerry? Sure digging mine here. Great amplifier for sure. Um, well, I was kind of purposely avoiding ECG and playing the Z-Lux for fear of what might happen. Now I have done it and it has happened, looking for gear to sell, upsetting the gear inventory. Sigh. The other thing was getting to Emerald City itself. As you know, traffic not too bad, but the parking down there is scarce. So I thought if they still had the Z-Lux Saturday morning I would head down in the morning to beat the downtown activity and I was thankful to find a spot on Washington itself same side of the street. Had a nice visit.

What color was it? Do you always take a personal guitar to demo/test a possible new amp? Sorry, could not figure out how to respond to multiple quotes in one response. The Z-Lux head at Emerald City is black with the Z-Wreck cloth. Looked nice. As far as taking my own guitar to test out an amp, now when I am serious about an amp, I take my own guitar with me as I know the guitar tones and pups. One guitar is easy to carry and this way I am familiar with the guitar as mentioned and don't have to be concerned with a new to me guitar. Playing a totally different guitar takes more effort on the guitar and playing and for me makes it more difficult to concentrate on the amp itself. You end up wondering if the pups in that new guitar are strong or weak and how does that guitar's tone stack up against your own guitars and thus the tones your get out of the amp. I play my guitars with the amps I already own of course and can try to assess whether or not this new amp would fit in or what it might have to replace with that same tone reference of my own guitars. On one occasion I took my tele and my Les Paul to test out an amp.

Also with a horrible back, this makes more sense to me. The combo is not all that heavy at 42lbs and it sounds killer with the eminence speaker. I am running mine with a 1-12 cab with a Celestian gold and in a 2-10 cab also with a c-gold and a DRZ 10 inch speaker and they both sound absolutely stunning. I think the z-lux would sound great with just about any combination of speakers.

The Z-Lux is looking pretty good along with another non-Z amp, That tremolo/reverb combination is tempting. If I get the Z I'll order it soon so I can get an amp with a Z in the serial number
