I love the the EL 84s; they're my favs. But, interestingly enough, the 6V6 really grabs my attention in each of the different clips. Must be the ZLux calling my name.

I really liked how he got some chords and some licks in each of the different playing examples.

I love the the EL 84s; they're my favs. Very cool demonstration! Funny how we all like different things. I like the 6L6GC and EL34 best... I could hear my Therapy and Germino Marshall replica in both respectively. I liked the EL84 the least. Funny how the Doc can take that tube and do amazing things with it.....ie my Maz Jr. Thanks for sharing.

The cathode biasing that Mike uses in most of his designs makes a difference from what is in that video. Especially on EL84's. At least that's what my ears think.

Great comparison! Confirms what I've been thinking, that valve type probably isn't the first factor one should take into consideration when shopping for amplifiers. There's definitely a difference but the often so knocked EL84 doesn't fare half bad in this and the more exotic types (KT66 and beyond) don't really seem worth the extra effort?
Although I might heat up the old EL34s in my 2203 again after watching this...

Although I might heat up the old EL34s in my 2203 again after watching this... Agreed. I love EL34's but had a Mesa Rectoverb that could take them. I never really bonded with that amp and shipped it off for the next one. I went from never owning an EL84 amp in 20 years to now owning two. Still a huge 6L6 fan, though. I would love to try a Therapy.
