Earthquaker (EQD) had or used to have a product called the Tone Job. Here's their description:
The Tone Job is a complete tone enhancement tool designed around a stereo preamp to cover as much frequency range as possible. What does this mean for you, the user? It means it can handle a wide variety of frequencies from electrical guitars, bass guitar, synthesizer machines and just about anything else you can plug in. The treble, bass and middle controls will cut or boost up to 20db. In addition to that, the level control will boost the signal (post EQ) up to 5 times the input depending on where the dial is set. A simple, perfect pedal to place at the end of your effect chain to boost output and fine tune your tone or at the front of the chain to alter the character of your guitar and breath new life into tired old dirt.
EQD's original concept, as per the above and Doc's confirmation, was an end-of-signal-chain box that could be used to restore frequency balance and volume after running through a lot of pedals. Of course, it was not limited to that use. Doc heard it, and thought it sounded great: transparent, super useful active eq, etc. So the Tone Job partially inspired and is incorporated in the Z Drive. The boost function on the Z Drive has gain in addition to level, distinguishing it from the Tone Job. The OD is specific to the Z Drive.
I don't think I misstated, but Dr Z can amend and expand.

Mike,
That really gives some insight to the basic design of the tone controls and the level and gain control on the boost section of the Z-Drive! This gives extra tweaking and refinement to your base clean tone when running guitars with SC's,P-90's and HB's in them through single-ended amps which is basically all of the Dr.Z's!Then you still have the mosfet driven overdrive section with the same tweaking of tone controls as well!:-)

Dr. Ice stated it as well as I could. Your spot on Mike.

Thanks for the diagram on the tone controls and switches Mike! It is becoming very clear why Doc was so excited about this pedal early on! Mac

I love the active eq in this pedal. It's so effective and the cutoff frequencies were perfectly selected. Great job, Doc!

I found this Mike Hermans demo of the Tone Job. You can do all the tone shaping that he does with the Z Drive, plus you've got multiple flavors of gain.
