Well, I'll start by saying I picked up a used wreck combo last week and I am very impressed with it. Ive had a couple heads in the past and they didn't work for me Bc of the high volume levels. And I didn't care for the attenuated tone. I wasn't using alnico speakers with it. It was a stock zbest. All that has been changed by the combo and the gold speaker. I'm really digging the woodiness I'm getting from the amp. Even with the attenuator. Maybe my ears have changed I don't know.
To the point.. I'm getting some tube rattle noise. Kinda microphonic sound with a lower freq rattle also. I did notice the tube sockets aren't very tight. Compared to my maz which are very tight.
I guess my question is: are the tube sockets hard to retension? Or is it a job for a pro? Could it just need a tube swap? I've been reading about these power tubes Doc is using and it seems they are somewhat hard to come by? Any advice on any of this is appreciated. Thanks Z bros.

Joey, I don't believe it is loose tube socket pins causing the rattle. Tube rattle is caused by loose internal connections inside the tube. You can re-tension the socket pins but that won't stop the tube rattle. The pre-amp tubes should be 3 Tung-Sol reissues, which do not rattle , but can hum if they fail. The EL-84's are most probably the culprits. I assume you don't have the stock 6n14n NOS Soviet Military tubes as they rarely rattle. Try search on E-Bay or contact The Tube Store great people with a nice stash of tubes. Z

Thanks guys. I guess "hum" may be more descriptive of the sound. I just thought maybe they were vibrating or something at higher volumes. Sounds like a tube swap is in my future. Easy enough!! I'm really glad this amp is working out for me this go round.

Hi guys, I also have a Z-Wreck combo that I bought new from the supplier here in New Zealand. It is quite frankly the best amp I have every played, but I also get a mircophonic style tube rattle at lower frequencies. I thought it was just something that happens, if this is a tube issue then it has been like it since it arrived. Doc, is the best thing to do just try a change of tubes? Cheers.
