I thought I had posted this question but I sure cant find it!
A friend of mine bought himself a Gibson LP last year, a Black Beauty...he let me play it one time and man, it had the sound I am looking for out of my Les Paul. The bridge pickup was nice and clear with the volume down but crank it up and you get this fat searing lead tone that still has plenty of high end to it. Reminded me of the tone JoeB gets out of his LP.
So someone suggested the Gibson Burstbuckers might be a good fit but I'm wondering, which one? 1, 2, 3, or Pro? Oh and then theres the 57 Classics too, which seem like they would be similar...too many danged options!
Which would you go with? I'm gonna be watching eBay for a cheap set, not willing to buy at new prices.

This may help you sort through the flavors but to each his own. I moved the '57 classics from my CS 336 to my Les Paul and haven't looked back. The 336 got some handwound PAF types and the newest member of my quiver, an '06 SG standard has the 490/498 combo and they sound great in that guitar. YMMV.

That guitar probably had a Burstbucker 2 in the bridge position Ronnie - I have them in my LP Standard and it gets the sound you're describing FWIW.

Generally the Les Paul Custom comes with 490R (neck) and 498T (Bridge). Hope that helps. Was his one stock? What year was it?

I'm gonna ask him what he paid for it, that might help narrow it down as to what model it is...theres so many danged different models of everything these days!

FWIW,a few years ago I put Gibson 57's in an Epiphone LP-I LOVED the way they sounded,I was after Brian Robertson/Scott Gorham Thin Lizzy guitar sounds and got what I wanted.I wound up parting out the pickups and Epi,but hope to have an LP-ish gtr again next year, and will probably put those pick ups in it. The Duncan 59's are nice too.

My Guild Bluesbird came stock with Seymour Duncan 59ers, and I've never had the urge to swap them out.

+1 on the 57 classics. I put them in my SG and they're excellent.

Burstbucker 1 in the neck, and a BB2 in the bridge is killer in an LP or SG....

Here's a sample of the neck (490) pickup straight into amp with some tremolo on from the SG I mentioned earlier. SG Neck

I have a 2000 Les Paul Custom with the 490 and 498. It really depends on the sound you are looking for. I personally like the Alnico II sound in the neck and the Alnico V bridge pickup is hotter and a good compliment. Gibson would not have put this pickup combination on that guitar for so many years if it produced a crappy sound. I changed the bridge and tail piece to Faber parts, which really brought the sound to life, and made it perhaps less muddy. If I was looking for a real difference in tone and a more PAF sound, I would spend the money on Throbaks. Good luck

I like my pedestrian Burstbucker Pros in the LP Studio. They are pretty hot but lend well to the types of music I play whenever I plug in the LP

+ 1 on Fralin……but there are SO MANY choices out there.
You might give Jerry Amalfitano a call Ronnie. He's in Keller and does some real nice work. I have his Strat PU's in my Am Standards. Jerry is a real nice guy that you can talk to on the phone, describe what you're lookin for and see what he can do. It'd be worth a phone call at least.

I have some of Jerry's pickups in one of my teles and yes he is a super great guy! My quest is to get something used/cheaper than going full blown new/boutique.
