Hi guys I've noticed on every topic that changing the speaker has been mentioned! Now correct me if I'm wrong but if the good Dr put a certain speaker in the amp that you've chosen surely that's the best sound it's gonna achieve? Why would he put in a speaker that doesn't make the amp sound its best is beyond me! If your changing the speaker don't you think you've bought the wrong amp?

Sometimes we can't help mess with things.
I go back to the Doc's selections for the most part. A lot of times "the best" on paper doesn't translate to "the best" in the real world.

I look at this way, all Z's are great amps, but not all fit in the band/situation you are gonna play in. Note several members own many Z amps. A different speaker may help your amp work better in your band. You may need more or less efficiency to find the right mix for your sweet spot. Most of us don't use the same gauge of strings that you guitar came from the factory with.... ME

It's just one of those components that is very easy to change, and it's the one change you can make to an otherwise healthy tube amp that will make the biggest change in to the tone - much more of a change than tube swapping, imo.
I have a ceramic magnet 40 watt that's very efficient but dark and an old, reconditioned alnico 35 watt that is the opposite, very inefficient but bright. The difference between them makes the MAZ seem like two different amps. Both good.
Bottom line is it's kind of fun! Eddie

I think doc finds the best "compromise" speaker. He couldn't sell nearly as many amps if he put $300.00 speakers in them. You can always bet you're getting the best moderately priced speaker that will sound the best with any Z you buy. Doc has great ears and delivers! It's just that with a simple speaker swap you can easily enhance an already great amp if you want to dump some big $$$ or if you're after a slightly different sound.

I have been literally shocked at how good the standard G12H30 sounds in my new Maz Jr. Studio. Without having a specific need for something different I sure couldn't see changing it.

Even the Doc offers speaker upgrades on his amps if you check the price list. So, I would say he's okay with us swapping speakers to find our sound. Now me? I really don't want to pull out my Greenback from my Maz Jr because I figure there's a little mojo in it since it came from the factory like that. Although, I have no issues plugging it or my Ghia into my 1x12 cab where I occasionally swap out speakers. I do have to say that my Strat/Ghia/Tone Tubby combination really gives a great singing tone.

"Best" is highly subjective.
And, as was said earlier, speakers are an easy and powerful mod... As are tubes.

Lots of variables, no question about it.

My Dr Z heads didn't come with speakers.......so, mixing and matching is normal

I may change a speaker because ai want the amp to break up differently or want darker or brighter

I tend to agree with bflatmaybe about Doc's choices. Having said that, my ear is not good enough to tell differences. I just know I like what I hear from Doc.

It's a good question... and, like Eric, I also (usually) tend to gravitate back towards whatever style speaker the Doc chose.
However, here's one good point with the MAZ 18 Jr., for example: With a G12H-30 style speaker (heavy ceramic magnet) it's a classic rock monster; but, with a G12 Blue style speaker (low-power AlNiCo) it's more of a sparkly/jangly Brit-pop feel. Both are awesome tone & feel... just depends on the mood you're in or the music you want to play.

Sometimes different, is the variety that seems better, then the old becomes the different.

I have two Z heads (Route 66 and EZG50) so I had a bit of a blank slate in terms of speakers. I have acquired a couple each of 212 and 112s to play with. They all sound good, but different. It's fun!

My ear gravitated toward a Marshall tone and Greenbacks, and after trying the Doc's recommended mod to the MAZ to bring out it's Marshall side, a Greenie sounded perfect to my ears.
Changing speakers is as easy as changing strings, albeit a bit more expensive. Same principle, however. Just because Gibson recommends 80/20 Gibson strings on a J-45, doesn't mean those are the strings that will suit everyone's ears.

Different speakers bring out different characteristics in the amp and while stock speakers are often perfect I think that with Z amps many of us find an even more personal voice when finding a speaker to bring out the amp characteristics that match us even more... part of finding a signature tone is experimenting with parameters and understanding their influence.

Howdy,
Why make changes to an off-the-rack Guitar?

"Best " is a perception not objective to everyone. Nothing changes an amp more than speaker choice.
