Now that I'm in the Z family again, I feel it necessary to tailor my overdrive section to my new Maz 18. Currently I have a Timmy and a Bondi Sick As overdrive. The Timmy is staying and is very good at transparent boost which is where I leave it set. The Bondi on the other hand sounds harsh and buzzy, and almost sounds like a fuzz pedal.
I'm after a smooth overdrive to add some thickness and middle of the road amount of gain. Think stage 2 overdrive for rhythm. The Timmy is an always on pedal to give some edge.
My thoughts so far:
Wampler Clarksdale Walrus Mayflower JHS Double Barrel BB Preamp

altho the TS is kinda passe, I wouldn't leave out the Maxon OD808. You might really like it. Works well with the Tim/my too.

Sounds like you're exactly describing one of these. And, if I may quote the Doc from the article mentioned therein: "Next year, I’m releasing a Dr. Z pedal and it’s basically going to be a channel of the Maz and Jazz designs, built into a six-knob JFET pedal. It has an EQ control with cut and drive. Now you can get this pedal and it will allow you to turn your Maz 18 into a dual channel amp. I hope that it will be on the shelves by early 2015."

I don't have a Maz 18 but a pedal that sounds great with my Maz 38 is the Rockett Animal- Marshall-y Great pedal.

Don't have an 18, but do have a 38. Some that have worked great for me are the Barber Gain Changer and Shane's RYRA Klone. The Gain Changer is awesome for everything from super light overdrive to very heavy tones. Molds very nicely with my Maz. It's not mid heavy though. It does flat mids or slightly scooped from what I hear. Shane's Klone on the other hand accentuates the mids very nicely as a Klone should.

Bb preamp is a good pedal for it. Use it with my MAZ 38.

Analogman Beano Boost, or any variant of a treble booster, should not be overlooked. I have a KTR and a Timmy as well, and I use set the KTR bw 9-11 on the gain to cook my Maz 18 set clean. I have the Beano before the KTR and often use them in tandem--it's rare for the KTR to be on without the Beano. I have the Timmy not as an always-on; instead, I have it last in my dirt chain for a clean volume boost and I use the cut controls to cut away exaggerated frequencies during solos. I see you have the Sick As, which, IIRC, is a Klon-variant of sorts, so if I had your setup I'd try the same drive chain but put the Sick As where my KTR is now. Obviously, this is just one way to go about things if you add a treble booster to your chain. Regardless of what direction you go in, TB pedals are worth finding out the hard way if they're for you or not. For a more in-depth review of a Beano Boost into a Maz 18, here's this: ztalk.proboards.com/thread/66918/treble-booster-maz-18?page=2

Where can I see/hear one of these and when do they come out? Well, you now know everything that we know about the pedal, too. So unfortunately, it's just a waiting game at this point. But it must be really close if the Doc's already comfortable talking about it openly.

The flat 5 by gtr wrks is a pedal that brings out the mid so it cuts real nice without ice pick sound. I have a friend using it right now in his studio with a vox amp. Great pedal but I don't use a bunch of OD pedals. I might use one with my Z's and a Nolatone but with my Red Plates I use some reverb and maybe delay. They don't really need OD's unless you are a pedal guy. I run my 58 pro just with a little verb. That flat 5 pedal is a good OD but it doesn't do the metal stuff but it cuts real good.

I use a jhs Morning Glory and a jhs Moonshine w/ my Ghia. With a volume pedal and these two overdrives, I can get just about anything done (with the exception of metal, lol). I'd recommend the double barrel.

I've got 3 ODs that I've really liked with my Maz. It depends on the guitar I'm using. For single coils, I've really liked the ZVex Box of Rock and the J.Rockett Archer. For humbuckers, the Skreddy Hyper-Fuzz Driver. All 3 work well with SC or buckers but that's just how I prefer to use them. Stacking them, especially the Archer into the Skreddy, give me even more options.
For a less pricey alternative, the MXR Super Badass sounds surprisingly good.

Lots of great suggestions above.
I'll second what someone else said - don't write off the "less than boutique" stuff when playing through a MAZ! A basic TS or SD1 can really sound great through a MAZ. I use a Fulldrive 2 into a Timmy. So many good tones through those! The cheapie EHX East River Drive sounds very nice through the MAZ, too imo.
Let us know what you settle on. Eddie

As mentioned earlier: +1 on the Xotic BB Preamp and +1 on the Xotic AC Booster. Of the 2 the BB Preamp is nice and smooth and you can dial in overdrive to distortion. I have had the BB for quite a while and it worked well with the Maz Jrs I used to own and the Maz Sr I now own. I get more than a few compliments with the Maz amps with the BB Preamp.

OP, I think you'll find that there are as many answers to this question as there are members of the forum. My favorite overdrives are, in no particular order:
1) JHS Morning Glory 2) Fulltone FD3 3) JHS Double Barrel (one side of this pedal is the Morning Glory, and the other is a TS circuit) 4) Wampler Paisley 5) Visual Sound VS-XO 6) Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive

If DrZ is making a pedal designed to work with the Maz, I obviously want one. Or two.
I can't wait!!!!

Lot's of good OD pedals out there. Probably won't go wrong with any mentioned here. Personally, my favorites with the Maz are the BB (excellent strat tones!), King of Tone, Wampler Paisley, Clarksdale, and HotWired, anything by Barber, Zendrive, and a few more I'm forgetting.

I have a zvex box of rock great pedal has the drive and boost option prior to owning the maz jr rarely used the boost now since I got the Jr I find I'm only using the boost and it just sounds tasty!!! The distortion on the box of rock sounds great to, but I don't go to it as much know. That maz jr seems to open the boost just perfectly!!

My go to and favorite overdrive if you can find one is the Reverend Drivetrain II. I always come back to that one. It sounds great with my Princeton Reverb and Maz 18. It is a tubescreamer in nature, but is more flexible because of the treble and bass controls. Quite a bit of volume and gain on tap too. I also favor this pedal because of the buffer in this pedal keeps my tone clean. It is a very natural sounding overdrive, does not color my tone too much, and my amp still sounds like my amp. Smooth sounding too. Great if used as a clean boost too. I have heard that the Visual Sound Drivetrain Garage series and V3 series Route 66 are essentially a Reverend Drivetrain as Bob Weil helped design the original Reverend Drivetrain

The MAZ has a pretty good amount of mids. Get a Mad Professor Simble and you'll never look back- it is 100% transparent, yes, more than the Timmy.(I've owned and A/B'd both)
And, because of the accent and contour knobs, you can make it really smooth or crunchy for days, and anywhere in between.
If you are looking for thicker mids, the Maxon OD 820 will give you that, but a more "even" tone because it has a clean blend built into the drive knob
