reverb.com/shop/hempopotamus-loudspeakersIncredible speaker builder and rebuilder. I bought a reconed, reconditioned Utah speaker from him for $50. It is the best speaker I have ever heard with the MAZ. The guy knows his stuff and, imo, underprices his speakers. I will try one of his "from the ground up" originals someday. Eddie

Cool to know Eddie, I've seen his offerings on Reverb before and wondered about them. Good to know a trusted recommendation, thanks!

Eddie Eddie, Did a search on this company because I'm looking at a speaker for my Maz. How are you feeling a few years later? Is the speaker standing up well, have you gotten anything else since? Thanks

I got a alnico 8ohm 30 w. He described it as a being very close to the silver bell that Vox used in the 60's in the AC30's. He said it's kinda in between a Blue and Gold. I can't say anything in comparison to those, but I love it in my Maz. I pulled this thread up, because I see he's doing a sale to end out 2020 in his Reverb shop. I highly recommend. reverb.com/shop/hempopotamus-loudspeakers

Glad I found this thread. I love old alnico JBLs and use them in almost everything I have here. I currently use a pair of vintage D-110s in my MAZ 18 Jr and they are the bees knees!! However I stole them out of a Peavey Delta Blues 2x10 where they have lived harmoniously for the last 12-14yrs and I need something to put back in there, -OR- something to put in the MAZ to replace the JBLs.
Enter ebay where I found a pair of JBL LE10-A woofers in sad need of reconing for a decent price. These are the same magnet assembly and basket as the D-110 and K-110, and Jason at Hempopotamus can recone them basically to my wants, by choosing which components to use in the recone he can make them sound a certain way so this will be interesting.
Searching for good, full range alnico guitar speakers that are NOT a copy or clone of the small magnet Jensen, i.e. the "tweed" tone is expensive and very difficult to find 10" alnico that doesn't start falling off at 90Hz. You don't get that Duane Allman sound out of speakers that won't go down to 40Hz or so, and the JBLs go to 30Hz and you get that low E string growl that he got out of the JBLs. Vintage JBLs are very expensive now, and the only real attempt at re-creating them is the Weber "Michigan" 10 alnico, which uses a ceramic magnet in addition to the alnico to boost power to 60w. I have not tried these in a guitar amp but would like to. They go down to 40Hz - 45Hz from what they tell me so if I couldn't find JBLs anymore I would certainly look into these. Weber says they act like alnico.
As a side note, Eddie Van Halen recorded the first VH album with a Marshall 4x12 cabinet, loaded with a pair of 25w greenbacks, and a pair of JBL D131s! You hear how growly and full his dive bombs on the low strings are? That, is what alnico JBLs get you, and ceramic magnets don't go there..

Hey guys - another resource for speakers on this Forum is Jim from Scumback Speakers. He's been a member for a year now. Really good source of information!
