I'm new to recording but would love to put some tracks down with my Z's. Maybe use some backing tracks? What are you guys using to do it? Low budget for sure. Don't have the $ for expensive recording software. I have a line6 toneport that has a mic input but haven't figured out how to use the recording part. It may be limited anyhow. Thanks for any tips.

You'll need to decide how sophisticated you really want to get. For example, will you want to be able to overdub multiple parts? If no, you can use recording software that is just stereo. If yes, you'll need more capable software. Your sound card already has a stereo mic and line input, so your tone port I assume plugs into that or USB. But what are you plugging into it? If you want to record your Z amp you'll need a mic. The better the mic, the better the recording. Unfortunately, you can spend a small fortune here, but the good news is you can get acceptable results with fairly inexpensive mics that you may already have, such as the SM57 or SM58. If you want to record over a backing track, that automatically assumes you want to do multi-track recording, because the backing track is actually two tracks already, and you want to add a third (your guitar). I suggest you check the following: Cool Edit Pro, Acid Pro, Vegas Pro. Each of these have a lower budget version that has limited capability, but they are very cheap and you can get some experience before you plunge into the big bucks stuff. For backing tracks, one place I always check is www.guitarbt.com/ because you can get tracks for free there. Do the guy a favor though, and make a small donation. He's really a good joe for putting up all these backing tracks and getting himself right in the line of fire of the RIAA. There are a million things to tell you about technique and such, but you must crawl before you can walk. Figure out what you're going to do about a good mic, get your recording software, set it up so your mic signal actually gets recorded and try a few things, even without a backing track, just to see how things work. Then take baby steps to the next level and the next. Good luck.

Another source of great backing tracks is over on TGP - they have a forum there for recording, and another for sound clips, and many of the members have collected large sets of backing tracks and made them available for free. I've downloaded hundreds of really great backing tracks from there.

The Gear Page (tgp) is at www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php

I just visited guitarbt, so if they were down they are up now. I am sure more donations would be appreciated.
