Been a while between clips - my studio is down for a revamp, but someone was asking about getting the Maz Jr into Plexi territory, and I thought maybe the Zen Drive or BB Preamp might get there. So I hauled out my little digital recorder (the Marantz PMD670) and recorded direct to mp3 - no studio tricks here. This is as recorded, so please forgive the clams and the lack of post processing. OK, here's the setup: Grosh Strat (bridge humbucker) > Zen Drive > BB Preamp > Maz Jr > Weber Alnico California 0:00 -> 0:23 = Maz Jr. 0:23 -> 0:46 = Zen Drive 0:46 -> 1:12 = BB Preamp 1:12 -> 1:21 - Maz Jr. 1:21 -> end = Zen Drive MazJrZenBBPre.mp3Obviously, when the Zen or BB was on, it was added on top of the natural overdrive of the Maz. Hope it helps!

Both sound great. Hard to tell from a soundclip... how would YOU describe the differenc ebetween the Zen & BB? Can one "cop" the other? Is the BB a cheaper (& less-wait) alternative to the Zen? Are they even in the same ballpark?

Good questions. Actually I think there are a number of factors to consider. For one I had noticed that when I switched on the BB that a lot of the bottom was falling out, so I pushed the bass control up until it wasn't doing that any more. But I think that made it a little less articulate - wish I'd recorded it with the bass control at noon instead. You would have noticed the difference between the two pedals in the low end, but I think the BB sounds better there. For another I noticed when I played really fast way up high, I could still distinguish every note with the Zen Drive. To me, that's a well designed pedal, because many pedals that "sound good" lose their articulation past a certain gain setting. With the BB set the way I had it, I didn't think it was as articulate as the Zen. But I'm going to try it again tonight and see if dropping the bass control brings the articulation back into the same quality as the Zen. You're right about judging things from clips, but except for a personal tryout, we don't have much else...

I think I prefered the sound of the Zen Drive best. I'm debating which of these to get, so these clips really help. Thanks

Now THAT is a nice sounding amp ;^) Have you tried running the volume back to 1 or 2:00 and running the mids full on? Try that and set the BB with both tones @ detent, vol and gain where they are > Lo imput....just try that

This Humbucker on my Strat is a bit of a different animal though.. Got sidetracked tonight - no time for clips Had to help the son in law mount his new HDTV to the wall....

I tried a zendrive once, and I can hear that top-end zing in your clip that I really noticed on my rig. The BB definitely does the saturated stuff, but the zen has a real presence on the top that's cool. Nice clips!

Great clips Benttop. Thanks for sharing.
I've been using Zen for light to moderate gain, replacing my AC and BB for the heavy stuff. Both are killer pedals to have.

Hey Benttop +1 fpr showing me a cool JR setting. I always shy away from the bass, but last night I used your settings with the middle off and T and B cranked......... Wow, great rock tone with a bucker! I also never knew my BB could sound so good........ I have always gone in the opp. direction with my bass. I love this forum
