I see Mesa is marketing a new 12AX7 type tube they are calling a SPAX7. I'm anxious to hear any feedback on it from the forum.

Actually they have been selling this tube for quite a while. It's the one they recommend for V1 in their amps. I have them in both my original Mk1s and they are as advertised…..rugged, non-microphonic, with good overall tone (IMO).

I used one of those in position 1 in a Mesa Mark 3 for years. Very reliable and quiet.
To my ears you sort of have a trade off or compromise... Quiet and sterile vs. lively and noisy.
I found that I sometimes missed the harmonic overtones the original 12AX7 had.
Hope this helps you. David

Thanks guys. I was not aware that this tube had been on the market that long because I've not used Mesa as a source for a long time.

They were originally using them in there high end audio amplifiers they used to sell called the Baron I believe.. They are a tested tube for microphonics and rattles etc then they gold plated the pins for an added mojo. I think Myles commented on these about ten years or so on this forum or it might have been lord valve. (man, I haven't heard or said that name in years!) But I believe seeing stuff on them that were just a little gold plated pins kinda thing.... I played Mesa amps for years and in fact still have two completely different rack set ups with the mighty Triaxis and the Studio Preamp at the heart. I almost until now remembered that I still have them!!! I gotta sell all of my un-used gear. I stopped using the Mesa stuff when I bought my first Maz Junior 2x10 combo!!! Even tho they are completely different animal altogether, the Maz just had "that feel" like my original 1970 Super lead Marshall had.......
Oh and Ummmmmmm....the rest is history as they say!
