Anyone used a 1x10 with the Route 66? I have a Z 1x12 with a Vintage 30 and I'm thinking I want something a little softer (and quieter). It's already such a mid-rangy amp and there's a little too much spike in the V30 in my opinion.
Any advice on a different speaker? Am thinking about a 1x10 for an earlier breakup, as well as lower volume.

Doc has commented about how much he loves the 66 with his 4x10, but that won't help you with volume. The 66 also seems to love the Z-Best loaded with a Vintage 30 and G12H Anniversary. I ended up going with a Heritage Series G12H(75) for faster break up. Which 10" are you thinking of going with?

I have no clue! That's why I'm asking! lol. I'm hearing that the 1x10 Greenback is great for a full sound that breaks up earlier, and is great for low wattage amps. I'll be using the cab for a Mini Z head, also.

Just for reference of a 30 watt amp running thru one 10" speaker....I tried my Therapy thru a WGS G10c/s as well as a red fang from eminence and it just seemed like a lot of watts for one 10" speaker to translate even though both speakers were well over the 30 watt mark. I'm not really sure why it felt that way as I would run my Ghia or Monza thru either of them cranked WFO as they say....but a 12" greenback might do what you want instead of thinking 10"...WGS has some nice lower decibel speakers available in their American series.

A 10" Celestion Gold might be worth a try. I agree that its a big amp for a single 10" inch speaker. Seems like you would lose some of that magic girth we talk about with the Route 66. I think it needs a minimum of two 10"s or a single 12".

Thanks! That is good to know. I think Avatar makes a pretty reasonably priced 1x12 cab with a Celestion Gold.

Or I guess It would actually be cheaper to just buy a speaker and swap it out in the cab I already have...

Not sure about 1x10, but I also found the single 12" to be not to my liking withe the 66. The 2x10 cabinet I find much nicer, still maybe more volume than you want, but I like the sound. As previously mentioned the Z-Best sounds great with the 66.

What are your thoughts re an attenuator? It may be cheaper in the long run. Just a thought.

Have been using a Brake Light, which helps some. My biggest issue with the V30 though is that spike in the mids. It's great for rocking but I don't think it's best for subtlety or softness if that makes sense. It's just very punchy.

Is the V30 well broken in?

It's about 6 years old, so I would hope so!

I use a Jensen Jet in my 1x10 Z cab with my Route. I love the combination! I have plenty of volume for gigging and plenty of girth as others have put it. Very nice clean or turned up with a Brakelite. I also use an Ethos pedal on occasion.

DC here! I have DOC's 2x10" cab removable backplate - that sounds great with my Route66. I have always preferred 10" speakers - they seem more responsive and percussive to my ears. I would off hand try one of Weber's 10" alnico speakers. The pricepoint is good they seem to be robust. And you can change their character a bit by choosing from different watts. The british series ir rated between 20 and 30 watts. taweber.powweb.com/weber/I dont have any personal experience though - so take this advice with a grain of salt. If you got the money you could perhaps spring for the Celestion gold - 40 watts: celestion.com/product/7/celestion_g10_gold/Cheers: Dixiechicken!

I ran it through a Red Fang. It was nice but, still prefer the Z-Best cab overall with the Rt66. Cheers !
