Hi gang, So, I think I've made my decision on my first Dr Z. www.humbuckermusic.com/drz-maz-18-jr-combo-reverb-custom-blackout.htmlIt's the Maz 18 Jr reverb in blackout and I'm getting it with the brake lite and the vinyl case they offer. The reason I'm going brand new is that I'm really intrigued with the EQ bypass option. I play mostly rock and it seems, from the videos I've watched, like it offers a bit more "oomph" when engaged. I guess I was planning on going with the stock G12H30 unless anyone here can convince me otherwise. I'd rather spend a little bit more now if it makes that much difference than swapping it out in the future and being left with a speaker I don't really need. Really looking forward to it. Thanks for all your help when I posted earlier.

I did the same (2x10 NR here) five weeks ago and have been on tour with it for four of those. It has not let me down so far. Enjoy.

Everyone's hearing and taste in tone is different, but IMO Dr. Z does a great job pairing speakers to his amps. Opinions vary wildly but I don't think you can go wrong starting with the stock speaker and get to know the Jr. before thinking about replacement speakers. I'm sure you already know this but be sure to give whatever speaker you get enough time for break-in. My 2cents.

I don't love the g12h30 on its own. Paired with a vintage 30 it works great, but alone it's not my favorite with a maz. I'd recommend going with the creamback. The gold and maz is really nice too, just more pricy

Great amp and versatile speaker. Give it a chance. As said above The Doc puts a lot of time into his speaker pairings.

I run mine with a Vintage 30, the thump is considerable. The only speaker I haven't been crazy about is the V Type, congrats and happy hunting!

The reverb model (good choice) is a smoother animal with the g12h30...personally I think its wonderfull pairing...as roscoe said give it some time...when well played in its a nice sounding speaker.

The first time you plug in, don't use pedals. You will be amazed.

Start saving for your next one.
Maz>G12H30 is a great sound. Eats pedals, sounds great on its own. The versatility is absolutely incredible.

Thanks, guys. Should be receiving it next week and will check back in with my findings. BTW, is "eats pedals" a good thing? Sounds unhealthy.

It's supposed to arrive tomorrow (Tuesday) and I'm pretty excited.
Question for those who know, I ordered it with the brake lite. I have to install it myself, I guess, as they told me at Humbucker that if they install it it voids the warranty on both items. But if there is a master volume on the amp then what, exactly, does the brake lite do?
I realize that's a totally noob question but I had to ask.
Thanks again.

The MV doesn't really do what MVs do on most amps. Think of the preamp volume as one kind of drive and the MV as another. It affects distortion more than volume.

The Master volume determines how hard you drive the power tubes, as per normal. You use the Brake-lite to determine how much power is sent to the speaker AFTER passing through the power tubes. So, if your amp gets too loud when you drive the pre-amp tubes AND the power-tubes into what you consider the sweet-spot, then you have the option to tame the volume without sacrificing tone so much by using the Brake-lite. You only sacrifice a bit of the saturation you get from the speaker itself when driven hard. To some, this saturation is essential, but it does come at the cost of loud volume. But all in all, at least you get to hear the lovely sound of hard driven power-tubes at a reasonable volume if you have all three controls: Pre-amp drive, Master (power-tube) drive and Speaker (Brake-lite) drive. Makes sense?

Okay. So I totally get it.
Ten minutes in and I get it.
I've been playing guitar for 35 years and I've owned (and own) some great amps.
But I can finally, safely say that for the first time I can actually hear how my guitar is supposed to sound.
Thank you, Dr Z. I am so freaking excited!!
And thank you all for your comments and help. Really happy I went reverb, too. Definitely wouldn't want to have to rely on an external.

But I can finally, safely say that for the first time I can actually hear how my guitar is supposed to sound. That's exactly how I felt with the MAZ. I fell in love with it right away at the store and tried some other amps after it, including a Z-Wreck and a Route 66 but I already knew I was going for the MAZ. Get a Brake Lite, too... the MV really doesn't do the job a MV does on most amps. You need to think of it as a toneshaping control like the others.

Yep. Ordered the whole deal, amp, brake lite and cover. Installed it yesterday and am looking forward to finding that "sweet spot."
