DOH, I posted this in the Monza section
To my ears, the Marshall Class 5 combo sounded much like the Mini Z combo (2nd generation)--that was before the upgraded transformer. Any thoughts?

To me, the Class 5 sounds congested and compressed next to the Mini. The Mini has an openness that moves to awesome distortion.

Mini Z is super cool. Also takes pedals real well. My son gets these great high gains from his Mini Z with a Suhr Riot in front of it!

I have lamented the sale of my Mini Z on SEVERAL occasions here on the Forum. HOWEVER, it was sold to help fund a Monza (Thanks, Todd, YOUR online review was a MAJOR selling point)!

I had both, at the same time. The class 5 had more upper end treble available, but was a bit sterile and lacked much character IMO. A bit how I felt about the Peavey Classic 30 I once owned. Cranked, it was kind of interesting, but that's not what I was looking for. The class 5 never could get that plexi like tone I had hoped for... And I stopped short of the recommended mods to get there.
The mini-z is probably not as versatile, but has tones more character and really nice deep creamy overtones.

The mini Z was the brightest amp I've ever owned. I couldn't bond with it. My strat's tone had to be down around 4 to make it useable. The Class 5 is much darker to my ears, and I preferred it. If the Mini Z had a tone control I think I probably would have kept it.
