My 25th CG came with a JJ 5Y3. I've read a lot of info on people having various NOS 5Y3 rectifiers in there. Could anyone recommend a certain one over another? Also, differences in performance, tone, sag/compression. Other tubes are V1 NOS RFT 12AX7, V2 NOS 5751, TAD STR EL84 into a 110 Z cab with greenback, sometimes a gold. Play mostly Tele. Thanks.

You've got some nice tubes there, all-around. I wouldn't necessarily recommend "upgrading" anything...
Rube rectifiers either work or they don't, I don't think an NOS would be much better other than for reliability. If the current one works fine (i.e., the amp runs as it should) then I'd maybe pick up a "spare" but not worry about it tone-wise right now.

I picked up a Bendix 5Y3 from Mike at KCA a number of years ago and it has worked flawlessly in any amp I've put it in. It was a bit cheaper back then, but this link will give you an idea of what NOS rectifiers go for. They are tested as well before he lists them. A mentioned above it is always best to have a spare with you as well as fuses. www.kcanostubes.com/catalog/17

I had a chance to talk with Don in the repair shop about tube swapping. We both agreed that Doc tends to put together a set of tubes that maximize the tone of the amp - they just don't arbitrarily drop tubes into the amp. It is interesting how many people go swapping tubes only to come back to what Doc originally had in the amp. Go figure

That's some great advice guys. Probably grab one or two for back ups. It sounds awesome anyways, I'm just always one to wonder. Thanks again.

I have NOS Bendix and RCA 5Y3s that came with a couple of used amps I've had. I also have a current production 5Y3 and a Weber Copper Cap 5Y3. I don't really hear any difference in them. They take very different times to warm up--Bendix seems to take about a solid minute while Copper Cap takes only a few seconds. That warm up time can affect length of life of your power tubes, as I understand it, so from that perspective, the Bendix is better, but I don't think it sounds better.
I agree with all the advice about a spare (and spare fuse too because typically if your rectifier fails you will blow the fuse). I recommend a Weber Copper Cap as a backup because it isn't glass and isn't fragile. It can roll around in your case or gig bag until you need it without much worry. I wouldn't use it as an everyday rectifier because of the short warm up time.
Just my thoughts on the matter. Some may disagree.
