Trying to get earlier break up with a 25thCG going straight in without pedals. Talked to Milke at kcanostubes and he recommended a NOS RFT 12AX7 in V1. Anyone have any opinions or info about the "high gain" and "balanced triode" options?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about getting an RFT with balanced or high gain options for a Ghia (or any other amp's V1 spot).
Just any good RFT will be work fine there. I have a couple and I find them to be good-sounding tubes. Maybe a better sound than what you'd get from other nos 12ax types, but it's all so subjective. Splitting hairs.
Best, Eddie

My secret to breakup at early volume is more rolling the tone more to the right. More bass equals more drive. Maybe not the best solution but it's a solution. Tubes haven't been quite enough of a change in the basic nature of the amp more of fine tuning thing for me. That said I've not exhaustively gone thru tons of tubes to solidify that statement as fact so your experience may be a little different.
V2 should have a 12ax7 instead of a 5751 in it as well if you want earlier breakup.

I tried 12AX7s in V1 and V2, but didn't sound that great and lost that sweet tone with the 5751. Not NOS 12AX7s though, groove tubes were all that I had on hand.

You could also try a less efficient speaker if you want more breakup. You will certainly get more dirt at lower volumes that way.

Thanks for the info, probably gonna try a greenback in the 110 cab just to see what it sounds like.

Thanks for the info, probably gonna try a greenback in the 110 cab just to see what it sounds like. What speaker is in there now? If it's the Red Fang...there's your problem. Aside from whether you like the tone or not...it's just a LOUD speaker. (for a given amount of power) The 10" greenback if a very quiet speaker. There will be a world of difference between the two when it comes to volume. The less efficient speaker will allow you to crank the amp or, thus getting more breakup.

Gold 10 in there now. Sounds great! Still wondering if there is more break up potential without pedals though.

That speaker with that amp...just perfect for what I need to do. The gold is a 98db speaker, the 10" greenback is a 95db speaker. The 3db difference is significant. It will allow you to crank up the amp more. And get the breakup you want. But all at a lower volume.

Went ahead and got the high gain version of the NOS RFT 12AX7 just to see, not a huge difference. Like most have said on here, biggest difference is choice of speaker and guitar. Greenback 10 sounds great, makes me wonder about a Gold/Greenback 210.
