Th SRZ 65 RC that I recently purchased had been refinished to match the guitar player's LP Special. I called Doc and he gave me the ""secret formula" he used back in the days he personally was finishing them - Formby's Tung Oil finish and a lot of sanding!! Here's a pic of the before and after. In about 20 years it will have that golden patina of my other Doc finished valence. I didn't reattach the "Z" yet - want it to harden a bit first. Before
After:
With the Z in place!

Mike, nice job! Definitely looks better. My wife uses Formby's tung oil on a lot of the furniture like things she finishes. She says the last "sanding" of the finish after the sandpaper and steel-wool has to be done with your hand and fingers only.

Looks great, Mike! Reminds me of the colors on Joe Walsh's pictured original SRZ--so you musta done it right!

That looks amazing. I just messaged harvey about giving my old RH and new look my valence is perfect just wanting something fresh and new looking. I can always put the mahogany valance back on i assume the doc made mine too? ))

I can always put the mahogany valance back on i assume the doc made mine too? )) Thanks Jamie! When I spoke with Doc he said he did most of the finishing of the early wood valences himself so in all likely you also have a "Doc Classic" finish on yours! FWIW - I also took a little bit of Formby's Tung Oil and rubbed it on my Mahogany-front Bluesman - almost looks brand new!! Covered a number of smaller scratches in the finish. (I suggest if you are going to try that that you might start in a smaller area just to make sure noone has used another finish along the say).
