Hey all.
Has anyone experimented with the tubes in their Z Wreck? Any particular fave brands? (Whether new or NOS...love to hear your suggestions).
I still have the original tubes in my combo. They're still sounding fine (no need to swap just yet), but I like to have a complete set of spares on hand.
Ciao for now.

I have never used anything besides the 7189's that came with the Z Wreck new or the replacement from the Tube Store. You need their "Preferred Series 7189."
From what I understand, you can't simply use any matched quad of EL84s due to the higher voltages the Z Wreck runs at. I wouldn't risk running anything but what the Doc selected for the amp.

You can run any set of EL-84s with the Z wreck, but it will sound different. There is a thread somewhere where Doc chimed in and said they are run within specs for any EL-84. Can't find that thread quickly, but found this one where someone did some experimenting. ztalk.proboards.com/thread/62039/power-tube-test

You are correct Bryan, the 6N14N's are the best for the Z Wreck ( labeled Preferred 7189 at The Tube Store). But the Z Wreck DOES NOT run higher voltages for basic EL 84's, plate voltage 320V @ SPEED and 300V in COMFERT.

The Doc spends a lot of time working with different tubes during amp development. I've tried out smarting him a few times playing with different tubes and ended up being happiest with the tubes that were designed with the amp.
My 2 cents

John (carrjimi) had a different set of 7189s in his Wreck. We did a direct listen against mine with stock tubes. We both heard a difference, preferring stock.

Very true, The tubes I had in the amp were 7189EV Preferred Stock and they definitely had a darker less lively tone. Like putting a blanket over the amp.

I can't imagine that a good set of 6bq5 s wouldn't sound good. Has anyone tried theis?

I have a pair of old 6bq5s in my monza and the tone is great. I think the amp hums loader than with jj's but tone is good. I scored some Russian tubes. They seam rugged and they don't rattle. Tone is good but I'm still deciding if it's as good as Jj's , maybe.
