Used guitar parts day. Vantage neck, Labradorian 1 pc body, no name pickups, recycled 5 way switch and pots/knobs. The body is a one pc native to labrador wood but I don't know what speicies as the original owner had it cut out and set in mud for a year to develop the patina then gave up on the project. I had to cut out the 2 humbuggy slots in the body, turned out it was too thin for a springy bridge, so I got a flat mount bridge. Warmoth pickgaurd, stewmac side plate and input jack. Looks like a P.O.S.but plays like butter. Looking into the actual species of body wood. I like it, put a wax coating finish on it.

I like it! I've always wanted a 2HB strat. How do you like that combination on this guitar?

I'd get rid of that case ASAP and find one that fits.
I've always admired Jimmy Herrings H/H Strat - killer tones. Congrats on your new inspiration!

Well that's a new one... Never heard of that. Very cool project.

Concentric knobs would be the finishing touch for me. That way you could still have independent volume and tone controls for each pickup. I love it ... it looks cool. I'd love to hear more about the " set in mud " thing too as well as a wax finish. Congrats. really cool ride. hope you play it all the time and stay inspired by it.

Still trying to get in touch with the original owner of the body. I was told he cut out a strat and a tele shaped body, then put them in a box with mud and put the boxes in his shed. They were there for a little over a year. The mud gave the bodies a natural yellowish/light brown tinted patina. Then he moved out of town gave the bodies to his father where they sat in a basement for who knows how long. My cousin works for a local housing authority and helps clean out apartments when people skip out on rent. Anything they leave he can keep if he wants it. In one apartment he found two electric necks. When he got back to the office he was showing the father the necks and the father offered the bodies. My cousin kept the tele body and gave me a neck and the strat body. It was only rough cut to shape and routed, so I used my dremel to finish the routing and hand rasped/filed the edges. I also routed the neck pocket a little deeper. Bought some finishing wax from the hardware store and buffed it in to a light smooth finish. The body is only 1and 1/4 " thick so I had to go with a side jack and flat mount bridge. The bridge was too low though, so I shimmed it up with a 1/8" piece of solid oak. It's wired with a standard 5 way switch, 1 N hum, 2 N+B hum, 3 B hum, 4 B hum + N split on for single on screw poles, 5 neck single on screw poles. Pickups were free, but I find them a bit hot for my taste. Probably some overwound variation. I roll the volume back a bit and they work, but still a bit muddy. Thinking of trying a pair of GFS vintages. Tuners came with the neck. Economical, but stable. A bit clunky for fine tuning. Might get some gotoh's to replace them. My goal with this guitar was to try to stick with as much recycling as possible, but then I switch over to my other guitar with quality hardware aaaannnnddd that thought starts to go out the window. Sanded the back of the neck to remove the plasticy/poly feel and buffed some guitar polish into it.
THE NECK. Not really my cup of tea as far as shape. I like a thicker C shape with medium or slightly over frets. This neck is a D shape 12" rad i think and defiitely shorter than medium frets. This neck was probably meant for a pointy guitar. Didn't like it at first, but I got used to it, now I like it. It's a buttery speedy neck. 25.5" scale.
If I do replace the pickups I wonder if I should keep the chrome/nickel cover look or go with zebras? The chrome covers give it a nice classic look. Any opinions?
