Anyone have experience with GFS (Guitar Fetish) pickups? They look pretty good and certainly priced right. Just wondering if they're any good. I've mainly been looking at their mini-buckers.

I have a pair of their Hot Liverpools that have been in a couple of guitars. Had some straight Liverpools before but like the hots better. They sound good to me. Especially for the money. The other guitar player in the band I am in has used some of their Strat pickups in some guitars he put together. I've heard the P90s are good too. There are better sounding pickups, but for the money you get more than you paid for. If you are looking at minis the minitron a mini filtertron looks interesting to me.

Here's my take.... The vintage/underwound pickups sound great. The overwound pickups sound like mud. That's because all they do is add more turns of wire....The real pickup people (Dimarzio/Seymour....etc...) Change the magnet strength...size...type etc.... to match the amount of wire they want to use. Just to be clear...I'm not saying that ALL their pickups use the same magnets....I'm saying that a particular model of pickup will have the same magnet...and that just makes it muddy. like this.. www.guitarfetish.com/1963-Strat-Professional-Series-Pickup-Sets_c_348.htmlStick with the vintage/underwound stuff and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have a set of Tele pups but eventually took them out. They were okay just had "something" missing in the upper mids, like they were scooped and it made then sound hollow to my ears.

Thanks for this Jacques! I was actually thinking that might be the case , I was struggling over which to get as they have several offerings in the mini-buckers. I was leaning towards the vintage wind.

I bought a set of their take on Filtertrons to see if I would like that "style" of pickup in a strat.
They were really decent and for the price a good value. With that said, I ordered a set of TV Jones that had more of the tone I was looking for, but obviously at a much higher price point.

I just had a set of Nashville "Vintage" Retrotrons put in my Epiphone 339. The original humbuckers lacked real definition and the bass was pretty flubby. Wow,it's like a blanket was taken off my amps. I'm currently using a Z M12 1x10 combo with a Gold and /or a Trinity Tramp combo with a Cannabis Rex 12'. I play Clean all the time and use only a Boss TR2 and and a Boss DM2 for fx. These pickups have really opened up this guitar which btw is a pretty good deal right out of the box. Now it's a really good guitar! I play some Country, old 50's, 60's rock, hits of the 40's, and back up some local "Old Tyme Fiddlers"; a real mishmash of stuff. I'm not a great guitar player by any means but have a pretty good ear. Being over 70 means I've heard a lot of different stuff. This guitar now covers all the styles I play.
I also have a set of start pups in my MIJ '83 Squier Strat. I got these from Benttop when I bought his MIM Strat a few years ago. He didn't know what model they were as he bought the guitar used. They sound very Hank Marvin in the Squier, they're not going anywhere.
Thanks to Jacques Belanger for the "Vintage" tip. I'm very pleased with the Retrotrons. I also had a set of Mean 90 P90's, they sound great to my tech, a little too "ranchy" for me.
