Thinking about getting a Monza...do they do clean well too? How's their headroom?
I'd love to find something with the cranked tone of the Mini-Z that has as much clean headroom too.
Does Z make such an amp?

I'm just gonna say NO. With the drive all the way down and the volume turned to where it is just on you will primarily get what would be referred to as 'clean with hair on it'. But that amp has really grown on me since buying it and I am really loving it as a home amp because of the master volume and live with my Ghia.

the Monza sounds amazing and...big!!! but it's not the right amp for clean tones. for clean tones: MAZ (cleaning up with the volumne knob rolled down) , the M12 and also others. I have a ZWreck and it cleans up perfectly too but it is not a clean amp

I like the kind of clean tones that the Monza does have. For some reason I always feel like the Monza has some Vox ish kind of thing going on with the cleanish tones.

Even with the MV mod there's not a lot of clean tone.

Getting sparkly cleans out of a Monza is like driving a 12 cylinder Jaguar through a school zone. You may be able to do it, but you're missing the purpose.

I would agree with the previous posts. However it may work for you depending on your situation. I use a 1x10 combo at home and it has a more than enough clean tones for my liking and use. If playing in another situation it may not be able to deliver what you are looking for. But the MV makes it very user friendly for home use in my opinion for a variety of tones. Matt

Check out jimfog's clips and vids. He does a great job showcasing the 'clean with a bit of grit' side of the monza.

Put a NOS 5751 in P1 and it will clean up pretty good.

Actually, I think that a lot of would-be Monza users are missing a trick here. At 'home' volume, there is a wonderful clean sparkle and chime to my (MV) Monza. It has some of the best 'slight hair' sounds that I have encountered in an amp. It loves reverb and delay too, and I really love my Monza cleanish sounds. Simpleton's observations have been spot on for me. Here's mine...

You know I've been thinking about this one a lot lately as I've been loving my Monza and my Monza has been loving me. I really do think the Monza has a nice clean sound...The Monza is a really cool amp that isn't what you'd expect. The clean tones are more honky rather than lush more glassy rather than full, but with the Master Volume you do get a good variety of clean sounds. The Common Hours kinda reminded me of how often I'm am enjoying the clean side of the Monza. I'm really starting to bond with the Monza now after owning it almost 10 months.

For some outside of the box thinking; how about a Ghia? More headroom and with the 5751 and 5Y3 plus some attenuation can get juicy breakup at lower volumes. simpleton really knows the way of Ghia and Monza so I'll let him expand on this, but it did occur to me that you may enjoy a Ghia.

I got a chance to play a Monza at Mike's place today (THANKS!!!) and it's an amazing little tone machine. Had no trouble at all dialing up a couple of great tones with my 335. That combination covers a lot of territory, to be sure. I do believe that the Monza is in my sights for my next Z. Very, very cool amp. And you guys are right, the little thing sounds absolutely HUGE. A trait that I'm finding is true in all the good Doctor's creations.

I'm thinking the key to Monza clean is guitar volume.
On a Maz, I usually play rhythm on guitar volume 7 and leads on 10.
On a Monza (12, 12, 12, MV to taste) , I get a nice clean rhythm on guitar volume 5, lead on 7-8, and nasty on 10.

The band level will really determine if you get actual "clean" tones BUT at home with the MV you can get clean and sparkley purity....just not super loud, but it's nice late at night for noodling into outer realms

Mine is halfway here, I didn't get the order out until Thursday so it's sitting in Maumee, Ohio right now. It'll be out for delivery to Swartz Creek Michigan on Monday...Woohoo!!! Red, 10" Red Fang combo and it's gonna be great.

I've been playing my Monza with my 335 all week and all I can get is dirty. I take the guitar and amp to a jam tonight, roll back the volume and drive knobs, roll up the master and wow, I've got the nicest clean. It is going to take me a while to get to know this amp!

Yeah, it's a cool amp, isn't it? With the volume dimed it just sounds like a squashed, nasty old '60's fuzz tone, but back off to around 2:30 or 3:00 and it's controllably nuts. I'm still learning it too, the Drive control is kind of strange...someday I'll get ambitious when I don't have a truckload of new songs to learn and pull the chassis to see where that control is wired. I think it's a second gain stage control kind of like the old Mark II Boogies had, but it's different... Great little fire breathing monster of a grab-n-go, isn't it?
