Hey all,
Problem with my '06 Z-28 head
It has been making an ugly screech-y noise when activating/de-activating the standby switch.
Tone-wise, the amp still functions as well as it ever has
Volume-wise the amp still sounds as loud as it ever has
Any thoughts?
cheers always,
Joel

The standby on my Maz 8 is set up prior to the main filter capacitors, so when it's switched on the caps charge. When it's off, the high voltage is removed and you can hear the amp's high voltage fade away from the output stage. If your Z-28 is set up the same way you may have a filter cap that's going bad on you.

Replaced the EF86 and the 5751. Checked the fuse - appears to be good (i.e. no burn markings) Sounded fine at the shop.
Got it home - plugged in, let it warm up, Volume @ 9:00; Treble @ 12:00 and Bass @ 12:00 .... thru the y-cable to the 112 and 210 cabs.
Flipped the standby, no screechy noise ... but a rather slight, low whoosh of air.
Guitar sounded alright. Played for a little bit, and the sound gradually quietened down and sounded like a fuzz pedal was on.
Any thoughts?
cheers always,
Joel

Take it to the smallest setup possible - guitar - amp - one speaker. Now you only have two cables to worry about, and three device. One isn't working so well, so start swapping out, one by one.

How's the voltage at the outlet? Any chance you're getting power fluctuations or perhaps a low-voltage situation?

What do you mean by fuzz sound? You mean while you're playing relatively clean but on certain notes it's like a glitchey fuzz or crackley not good fuzz sound? That sounds like what my friends Bogner was just doing.

6V6 tubes - one is far more brightly orange than the other. Could be time for a new duet of JJ's?
Fuzz - like a permanently engaged fuzztone is one for all notes and sounds
cheers always,

A new pair of JJ 6V6 tubes, a new Tung-sol 12AX7 and an EH EF-86. Z-28 is sounding healthy again - perhaps a lil' more fiesty than before. I'm happy. Thanks for your patience. cheers always, Joel
