I am trying to squeeze a little more clean headroom out of my SRZ-65. I love cranking the gain and letting it rip...but for gigs I am struggling a bit as I would like to use it as a pedal based rig and I just can't get quite enough cleanish tones out of it. Has anybody successfully tamed their SRZ (just slightly) with tube swaps? Seems like something lower gain in V1/V3 is the ticket???

A 5751 tube will take some gain out of the amp. My LE came with a GE 5751 in V2 and I did not like it since I wanted more gain. I replaced the 5751 with a 12ax7 and there was more gain. You could experiment with the 5751 in V1 and V3 as well to see which you prefer.

Sadly I've never played an SRZ. However I have owned several Z's including a Maz38 w/reverb and a Route 66. At the moment I own a plexi to 80's based amp. From these amps I've learned how important the guitar volume is. I used to never use the guitar volume. I certainly had no idea how interactive the guitar volume can be with an amp that is properly set up. With the SRZ you should be able to dial in a good punchy clean at low guitar volumes. As you increase the volume to 3-5 you should get more gain from the amp. If it's too much gain change the amp setting for more master and less gain. Turn the guitar up to 7-10 and you should have your lead tone. If not add or subtract master and gain to taste. Want punchy rhythm turn the guitar back to 2 or 3.
That said I hear kt77's will give more punch and clean at louder volumes.
Luck.

I asked Myles that question and he gave me some really good tune advice. Don't hVe a link for you but it's on the Ask Myles section
The tube changes did lower the gain a bit but not to where I would like it to be.

I just bought a NOS 12AY and a couple 12AT's from KCANOS - gonna do some tube swapping. I am not trying for Twin like cleans - but right now - with the volume dimed I am into serious RAWK! before the gain hit's 9:00.... with a Tele. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.

The 12ATY PI and Mullard CV4024 worked some magic. Smoothed things our a bit, and gave me a definite increase in clean headroom. It sounded really good before - just a little too aggressive for my needs. Now it's purrrrrrrfect. Gain @ 10:00 , ride the guitar volume from a really nice clean to crunch, kick in a Rat for the RAWK! Great setup, very similar to my JTM-45 with a tighter bottom and a little more attitude.

SS rectifier will help in your task. There will be the associated bias and possible preamp B+ concern/adjustment. A more efficient speaker ( assuming there is one more so than what is present) is the easiest way to get more headroom.

I used my SRZ as a Semi Clean straight in and pushed it for 3 stages of Gain, I achieved this by Setting the bias Of the Tubes a Bit on the cooler side but not too cold where it sounded Brittle, If you turn the Gain down Low and Crank the Volume you will be shocked how much cleans there are in the BEAST, If that doesn't do it, the 5751 is the ticket, I have tried that and it seemed it just wasn't the same amp even pushing it with Pedals. You can also try using speakers with heavier Magnets like an EV 12L its super spanky clean when used correct and will crunch hard when pushed.

I've gone through the same scenario. I just didn't bond with the lower gain preamp valves (and I tried a boat load). Readjusting the bias, Amp gain/volume adjustments and sliding the EV into the cab (I think there's a Gold in there with it now...hmm better check) did the trick for me.
