The sound is a bit better overall, compared to the original mixes. Picking excellent as usual. I don't mind the "fuzzy" sound on heaven, but I see what you mean. What neck pickup do you use?

I like that pickup set a lot. I've been flipflopping between a set of Lollar vintage and duncan antiquity neck/Jerry Donahue bridge combo. The bridges are both very good, but the neck pickups on their own are pretty dull.
I prefer the neck pickup in your set, much more distinctive. I'll have to investigate getting a set shipped up here Canada to try.
Thanks a lot for the clips.

I really dig the Jerry Donahue Bridge. Sounds like a Tele should sound, but with less icepick factor than a lot of vintage style Tele pickups.
rcrecelius- I didn't think the tone was too fuzzy. I thought it sounded kind of cool, unique. The Los Lonely Boys album tone is a bit cleaner (Twin Reverb), but in a live setting with the tubes smokin' in the Z28- have fun with it!
Good stuff...

Thanks for all the info. The Jerry donahue is what i'm using at the moment in the bridge, and I'm happy with it. Totally agree with you J, it sounds like a good vintage tele without the icepick. The lollar bridge is good too. Pretty much every neck pickup I've tried was a letdown, dark and not much character. Is that just the nature of the tele neck? Ronnie's certainly sounds good.
Does removing the cover brighten them up a bit?

Does removing the cover brighten them up a bit? As a rule yes, tele neck pups are dark and dull, My Fav's are the Amalfitano, Rio Grande "Muy", and I played a Twisted Tele neck pup in the store yesterday and was quite impressed, it's a Fender CS model. I'll post another clip later "Allman Joy", at the end I do a Bluesy thing, that's Jerry's neck pup ito a cranked Ghia.

Does removing the cover brighten them up a bit? You can remove the cover to get a brighter, more open sound but you risk damaging the pickup if you dont know what youre doing...been there, done that ...you could also try wiring the tone control to be on the bridge only, which would also open the neck up a little. Jerrys neck pup is the only tele neck pup Ive ever really liked and it has the cover so it retains the tele look without the usual tele neck position muddiness. I'd strongly suggest trying his pups.

I like the bridge only tone idea. I always find the neck sounds better when its on "zero load" (no cut) and the bridge sounds best with about a quarter turn of tone cut. I'll try that, and if no success remove cover.
I do think I 'll try some of those fine texan pickups, though. Sent an Email today.

I have one Tele with the tone on the bridge only, does wonders for the neck pup and is a great and worth while Tele mod.
