Well it's that time again. It's gonna be a CG this time. Here's my scenario: i have a 1x12 Z convertible cab with a Creamback just sitting in the corner. Should I buy a Ghia head or a 1x10 combo?
I've had a Maz Jr. 1x12 combo is not my cup of tea as far as size & weight. Tone was sweet of course. since the MAZ, these following heads have come & gone, RT66, Remedy, Ray.
thanks in advance for the feedback...

I have the 1x10 combo..but if the Maz Jr 1x12 combo was too much, then I'd consider getting a Ghia head.

The head is probably the easiest to cart around. That would be my choice.

Not much difference in weight between maz 1x12 combo and ghia 1x12 combo, had both, still have the Ghia.

You can't beat a Z 1x10 for grab-n-go form factor and I am a long time lover of a 1x10 CG. If you can try one out at your typical volume before you buy you may find you miss some of the lows you get from those big Z 1x12s OR you may love the punchy mid grind. I've enjoyed Ghias, a Monza and my old Interstate '66 though a Z 1x10 but I never did warm up to my Z-28 into it; definitely preferred the 12 there.
If you can wait for a bit (like 6-8 weeks now?) Mather makes a 1x12 combo cab for small Z heads in the design of the Z Studio 1x12. They're LIGHT too if you get it in pine.

I thought that the 1x10 with the Ghia was really light and easy to pack around and with the Red Fang it would hang with amps twice its wattage. Ted is right about losing some low end with the 10 verses the 12 but I never missed it personally. However I prefer heads and if you already have a cab just sitting around....well you might save a chunk of dough just buying a head. Mather Cabs is booked out like 13 weeks right now so if you took Ted's suggestion you'd be waiting till right around Christmas....That might just be the best present a guy could get.

I'd vote for a CG head.
I've not tried the Ghia into a Creamback, but I bet it will be fine. Besides, you can always swap a different speaker into your cab.

Here is what I would do, if your budget allows. Get the 1x10 combo. You can try it out and see if the sound and size/configuration suit you. You can also run the combo through your 1x12 cabinet and decide which sound you prefer. If you decide you like it best through the 12, you can always take the chassis out, sell the combo shell, and buy a head shell.

I prefer separate head and cabinet ... Lighter and versatile.

I would buy the head since you already have the cab.

Well, let the search begin... RED is the color. Guess I need to explore what's out there in the used market. I love & gig mostly small combos but do like the 1x12 Creamback. I find I miss the extra bass more at home but nothing beats a nice cuting midrange in the band mix. Thanks for the great feedback guys!

I have the Ghia head and 2x10 Z cab and it sounds great. I also have a Maz 18 1x12 combo. To me it's a matter how many trips you want to make loading and unloading gear. Having a small combo is convenient for a grab and go amp. The head/cab usually means a couple of trips. Since you already have a cab I would also recommend the head version. It is more flexible and if one of your buddies has a spare cab that you can use then that is one less thing for you to take . Plus it gives you a better opportunity to explore different cab/speaker options as stated above. If the Maz is too heavy maybe getting a small inexpensive dolly is an option? Stack several things and make one trip!

For what it's worth, I think my CG has plenty of bass running through a 10" Celestion Alnico Gold.
