Hi guys,
I'm looking for a matched quad of EL84's for one of my amps. I've heard JJ's are decent new-production tubes. But I'm also interested in the Ruby Tubes? Have any of you used those?
As far as NOS, I've heard that GE's are awesome, but they're awfully pricey. Any recommendations for good deals on NOS?
Thanks, Brad

I'm surprised no one has answered! I was interested to read what other folks have tried.
So far, I've tried Groove Tube 5's, JJ's, NOS Tesla's, and Fender branded Groove Tubes with a blue label. I really don't hear a ton of difference, other than the Tesla's seemed to have a slightly smoother top end when I tried them, but it was a short trial. I'm going to throw them in tomorrow and keep them in for a while. I'm trying to determine if NOS tubes are worth the expense. Based on what I hear when I put in the JJ's and GT's, I might stick with new production tubes.
As a side note, I don't think my MAZ 18 reacts to power tubes the way my '73 Deluxe Reverb does. My DR can be a bit finicky. The MAZ seems to like everything I've tried!

Hi Ches,
I've heard great things about the NOS Teslas. I have a set of JJ's in my Stingray, and they sound great. I also have a set in a different amp, and it sounds good with JJ's. But that one is notoriously sensitive to tubes. So I'm thinking of trying something else just to see if the hype is true.
From what I've heard, the best tubes in my amp are the NOS GE's, but those are a bit pricey to say the least. I'm thinking about a quad of Teslas, or another set of NOS, if I can find some without breaking the bank.

I've decided that I can do new production for EL84s, but NOS is probably the way to go for preamp, rectifier, and PI duties.
I'd love to splurge on some NOS honeys for my Stang, but it sounds so good as it is that I can't justify it yet.

Hohn, That's exactly what I did with my Stingray...JJ's for the power tubes, and NOS for the rest. I have the Dario Miniwatt EF86, a Telefunken 12ax7, and a Amperex Bugle Boy rectifier. While I love the amp with my Fenders, I play it just as much as a jazz amp with my D'Angelico. Sweet, warm cleans. Ahhhh.... I'm still searching for a good NOS quad of 84's.

JJ's Period Call Bob at Eurotubes. He will hook you up big time. Are JJ/Tesla's what come's in the Maz 38 Senior, stock? If not are these JJ/Teslas considered better than what comes stock?

Tesla no longer exists.
JJ is a different company that does exist.
They were never the same tubes.

I just did some retubing myself and took the same approach. I used the mislabeled Jan Phillips Rec's in my Ray and Rx, and an Amperex Bugle Boy Rec in my GT. I have a NOS RCA 12AX7 in the Ray, and V2 of the Rx, with a RCA Command 5751 in V1 of the Rx, as well as NOS Dario EF86 for both the Ray and Rx. I put the Mullard relabeled 12AX7's in the GT and did JJ #6 quartets for the EL84's for the RAY and Rx, the GT is new enough the EL84's are fine. Now I am broke!! Oh yeah, and a NOS Tesla EL84 and NOS GE 5751 for the Mini... did I mention I was broke.

JJ's Period Call Bob at Eurotubes. He will hook you up big time. Bob is great, write him an email and tell him the tube compliment and what you are looking for (more/less breakup etc.) He tightly matches his tubes and ships from Oregon to Massachusetts for me in about 2-3 days. My thought is, we've all purchased fantastic amps that would probably still sound decent with malfunctioning tubes. New production at 1/10th the cost of NOS has to be the way to go. eurotubes.com/Tubes are Good!

Hey guys. I wanted to thank you for the recommendation to use Eurotubes. I've been pairing my old Fender Quad Reverb with my Stang-Ray lately. The old Quad was badly in need of new tubes, as I hadn't touched it in 20 years or so. I found the website, ordered a Fender-kit on Friday. Yesterday (Monday) the tubes arrived. They're now housed in my Quad, and have brought it back to life. I mentioned to Jay & Bob that I had gotten the reference for their services here on the Z-board. Thanks again, MeZa
