I just started using round files (#4, #2, and a mousetail). I hunted them down after reading this article to give them a try. I like them a lot.

I use an Xacto razor saw to start the slots. Then I use a set of Swiss-pattern jewelers files that I customized with a surface grinder for various widths. These are very high quality steel that I bought from a tool-and-die makers supply store about 40 years ago. I used to use them to finish the slots but now I just use them to rough-in the slots slightly smaller than final width. I now use a set of Stu-Mac files (the flexible ones) to finish them. I've had these for about 15 years. I don't use them for the full cut so they have lasted over 15 years. I think they still sell them. They are the 'gauged' files. You don't really need the full set; just the ones you use most often. If they aren't the exact size you can make slightly wider slots by rocking them side-to-side when filing.
