Swirl?

I'm not sure if I'm trippin', but w/ my 'Wreck combo at about 11:00, BL at 1 click or more, there is this unique harmonic "swirl" (only way I can describe it) happening. Almost as if I have a phaser on. When the amp turns up, it almost helps achieve a "fuzz" tone as the swirl is accentuated... Anyone else hear this in their amp?

You're not in a room with a ceiling fan, are you?
Not sure if this is the same swirl you hear, but if you have a ceiling fan in the room, try turning it off and see if you still have that swirl?
I've fallen victim to this and thought something was wrong with an amp I had once.. Just the sound bouncing off the fan instead.

mattp, many guys around here have reported the harmonic swirl that you're talking about, in various different Z-amps. In fact, somebody just this weekend at Z-fest upon hearing my Carmen Ghia w/G10 Greenback said exactly that! Usually, the StangRay is the one that most people will notice it in... I also sort of refer to it as, "this amp doesn't have reverb, but it doesn't need it."

"this amp doesn't have reverb, but it doesn't need it."
I am finding the exact same thing. Especially on Comfort--there's a unique bloom in the decay of notes. I have left my reverb pedal off, or run the mix so low it's almost pointless.
I have noticed this same swirl on a Jackson Newcastle, so I wonder if it's an el84 thing.
This amp is definitely going to be a journey in tone and inspiration--thanks, Dr. Z!

"this amp doesn't have reverb, but it doesn't need it." When I got my first Z, I looked at it and thought "this will never work, there's no reverb". Then I played it and thought "I'll never need reverb again"! I haven't used reverb since 2006, but recently got a reverb pedal, just because (and for a surf song we play). But other than that song, when I do use it with my Z, I have it set so low that I almost can't tell it's on. Some amps just don't need it.

Telejas--good to hear someone else running the 'been super low. The 'Wreck has literally "wrecked" my pedalboard--I'm mostly using GV and tone knobs on my LP to get what I want, mayyyybbbeee goosing it w/ an EP boost if I want a bit more oomph. But, all the delay and verb I used to rely on are left off...and I love it! Really has forced me to work on technique and finesse (hence, actually playing) more than wrangling tones from gear.

Not unique to Z Wreck or EL84 amps, but characteristic tone signature of DrZ IMHO. All of my Z amps have that to one extent or another, to the extent that when I goth used to plays Zs, my reverb pedal disappeared from my pedal board, and has never returned!
I used to use reverb as an always-on crutch to fill out my sound. Not needed with DrZ amps - it would now be a desired, specific effect, if I needed it, which I don't.
DrZ - genius!

It I'm reading your signature correctly....you went from a Blues Jr to a Z Wreck! That's like going from a Pinto to a Lamborghini. The swirl is that 3D sound of the 'Wreck combo I've mentioned many times.... Or it could be your brain trying to process the new found, organic, juicy, silvery sounds that are virgin to your ears.
