Have a look at the Red Fang (Alnico as well). Dr. Z ships the RF with the Ghia. It is way loud, 102dB - ish.
You can post on the BST to see if anybody wants to sell a used Red Fang. If you don't like it you can sell it.
Tone Tubby uses hemp cone speaker cones which helps to knock the highs off a bit.
Eminence Cannibis Rex is similar, hemp cone, a little cheaper. But a C-Rex is ceramic.
Eminence Canis Major is hemp cone, Alnico.
Lots of options out there.

Speaker change I think will do much more than tubes....at least for me. If you could go somewhere with the amp and try it with different speakers you'll see how the Ghia reacts with different speakers and that might help your understanding of the amp more. For me the Ghia has been a real eye opener to all of the different ingredients of the amp. Speakers are a more major change and then tubes to add the seasoning to your meal.

If you go with a Red Fang, make sure you break it in well. Mine really delivered the goods after a year. Really took some loosening up. Very efficient and loud speaker.

Hey friend I'm gonna be very honest with you I think you should just focus on selling it and getting another Dr. You see there many great options available. I don't think speaker changes and tube changes will do a ton of a difference if you don't get in love with the essence of the amp. I'm sure another one will do wonders. Because that's the way the world roles. In Spanish we say "pa Los gustos, Los colores" (for different tastes, there are different colors to choose) in English I believe the translation is "to each his own". Do it.

You could also translate that as "try a Maz Jr next".

"I don't think speaker changes and tube changes will do a ton of a difference..." I'd have to disagree strongly with that statement. The Ghia does respond well to speaker changes, I know that from 7+ years experience, playing in many different gig situations and through many cabinet configs. (Try playing a CG through a Z-Best sometime, it's flippin' awesome!) As others have said, tubes can also make quite a bit of difference, especially some good NOS ones. Certainly, to each his own, but the speaker swap(s) the OP is considering is well worth it and alot of fun too.

I'll chime in one last time. Speaker and tube changes will make a difference (I agree, speaker\cab more than tubes) but they will not change the basic character of the amp. Only you can decide whether you really like the amp and wish it just sounded a bit different or whether it's just not the right amp in the first place. I enjoyed mine a lot (mostly played clean) but it was not anywhere near my favorite el-84 based Z amp. It was the first one to go when I did my el-84 amp sell off last year. My favorite of the el-84 amps for pure tone was probably the Ray but the Maz 18 NR was the most useful over the long run and the one I owned the longest. YMMV

I agree with Meanslide and Ridgeback. Speaker changes will make a big difference for the Ghia.
Alnico will sweeten up the tone quite a bit.

Tone is subjective. Stay thirsty my friends.
