Has anyone tried out the Svetlana, JJ or EH EF86? Do they sound okay? Are they reliable? For the money, I was thinking of picking some up for at least using as spares in my Stingray.
BTW...I think the Svetlanas I've been seeing for $12.00 are original "Winged Cs" from the 80s.

I thought Doc had some good things to say about the EH, but that was awhile ago and I haven't seen any comments since.

The Svetlanas, sometimes branded as Sovteks (so I don't know who actually made them) have been out of production for quite a while. This could possibly be due to very poor quality and microphonic performance. Myles has run test curves on all the new and old ones. The new ones consistently don't meet the specs and all the NOS samples exceeded specs.

Mike, The Svets/Sovteks were very inconsistent and very unreliable over their entire production history. GT had about a 75% reject rate. They sent so many back that Aspen finally just dropped them from the GT line. Then production stopped so new tubes from them (with a higher price) could be introduced. Unfortunately, even though they were better tonally than the old ones, and the reliability was improved somewhat, they still were a far cry from any NOS version and I mean ANY NOS version. A good NOS EF86 lasts for years. A Mullard in a friend's 61 AC-15 I maintain is the original tube as just one example. I send ALL my EF86 customers directly to you as a side note and in fact, every EF86 in my own amps with the exception of one came directly from you. The one that did not come directly from you was a GEC. But ... it sort of came indirectly from you as Terry Guder bought it from you and sent it to me as a birthday gift two or three years ago. As a side note, that tube has been in a Dr. Z KT-45 that gets continual use and is loaned out on a very regular basis .... and it is as good as they day it was installed. I have probably tested every one of your EF86 offerings and in every case without exception they were right on NOS spec and pretty darn perfect. To find ANY new production EF86, no matter who is making them, you would need to go through a fair batch to find ones that met NOS spec. Maybe 10-20 or so to find one on target. Once you have a spec one then you have to like the tone. If you like the tone and the tube has nice stats then it is a matter of luck on how long it might be before the tube goes microphonic on you. The Z amps are the least fussy of any of the EF86 amps when it comes to a tube going microphonic. The Matchless and Bad Cats are very hard on EF86 tubes. There are now a lot of amp builders who jump on the EF86 Pentode bandwagon that implement the tube in the standard way .... looking for higher gain, and this is the problem as well. In the Z amps the tube is implemented in a different way than others do. So ... unless things change and materials improve so the new EF86 crop has it's standard raised I will continue to use you as my resource for my own EF86 tubes and all those of my GAB clients and GT folks I support. Fortunately I am a bit older than you so statistically I will be dead before you are so it seems that in my case I have a lifetime source for great stuff as long as you stay in the business

Hey Myles. You may be older (not sure if you really are or why you think you are) but you're still a babe magnet (check that photo in your sig) ~~~~~ (drooley face) Mike ... I am not sure what the deal is here. Part of it is that I take a lot of gals to shows, flying, sailing, and I guess I sort of fun in circles that they like to run in. Or .... I tend to take people to places that most cannot get into easily. Or .... maybe the biggest reason .... I am military trained to sit back and be patient .... am a gentleman, which is rare these days in many places, but also am known to have a lack of fear to commit as is somewhat shown by my three marriages. And .... due to my corporate background with a lot of past income I guess I have a few bucks on hand as well so I tend to have a bit of fun and at the same time I can act like a 50 year old when it is necessary and act like a 15 year old the rest of the time. The aerobatics keeps me in shape and the long distance single handed sailing lets me get by with ease on two hours of sleep a day broken into segments of 30 minutes when necessary. I think if you check with most of the gals they will say that even when they are in their early twenties they can't keep up with me that easily. So it boils down to being in decent shape, being polite and considerate, having a few bucks, knowing how to have fun and having many of the right folks in my social life. If you ask Anna Ericson, the gal in my current Avatar (you can talk to her via myspace) she will be one who can tell you how hard it was for her to keep up with me for a week. I'd be up for 3-4 hours when she was with me before she even got up. She is 30 and in great shape, walks two hours a day back home and hits the gym all the time. She also knows how many folks call me during the day asking to go off and do something with me. So .... in the end it is just part of a day's activities I suppose. If you get out this way on vacation or whatever I would be happy to take you out for a typical evening anytime with some of my friends. P.S. My biggest piece of advice is .... If you are married or in a relationship and you are thrown out keep in mind that what you are getting as a benefit is that with the right attitude you get to start your life all over from a fresh start. This is pretty darn cool. Heck, do you really want to end up trying to live in the same way on 1/3 the income you used to have or even less if there is child support? Do you want to really get that 20,30, or 40 year retirement pin from the same company or job you had? Heck no! Grab a boat and take off. If you are not into boats buy a cheap RV or something. Leave the money out of the lawyers hands and pockets, leave the ex everything. It is cheaper in the end. If you really hate her for some reason than take her on a "once last chance to make things right second honeymoon" to Brazil and get into an argument with her in a public place. Their laws are loose enough that you can probably terminate her at the restaurant and have all the guys there buy you a drink. (Sorry gals .... not my way of doing things and I am not responsible for their laws .... I am not that evil and one of my ex-wives could have beat me up at the drop of a hat anyway). But ... leaving the ex with stuff, well ... the word gets around and that becomes part of your reputation .... you tend to let them have it all when they dump you so that is another attractive side point in the minds of some gals. As a side note I did not do this with my first ex-wife. That was training for future ex-wives I suppose. I should have taken the first ex to Brazil if I had more sense at the time.

The aerobatics keeps me in shape OFF TOPIC... MYLES! (I was just researching EF86's)... I didn't know you were an aerobatic pilot. So was my dad. He had 2 homebuilt Pitts Specials, about 20 years apart. He built them himself... from scratch, not from a kit. He actually built 8 airplanes throughout his life. Flying was his love & hobby, like music/guitars is mine. What do you fly?
