Hey gents,
I just sold my stangray and my RxJR. I'm looking to replace bother amps with an M12 head. I need something lower wattage that's like the stangray. I loved the ray but it was just too bloody loud for at home. and I really liked the RxJR but I traded it for an EZG.
ill be running it with a gold. What cab should I pair it up with? Should I consider the 1x12 combo? All my amps are head and cab config.

Definitely go with some sort of 1x12 config. I like the combos for portability but any of the Docs 1x12 cabs sound big. Really just come down to personal preference. As for a low powered stangray, the m12 doesn't quite get there IMO. The RX Jr does a better stangray impersonation with the right speaker. The m12 is a good amp in its own ways, though. A stangray jr is something I wish the Doc had - I'd definitely be in for one of those.

I recall a thread about swapping in a different rectifier tube to make an M12 Ray-like. Believe it was a 5ar4. Dr Z ok'd it too, iirc.

You have a great memory because I just ran across that thread 10 minutes ago. I will try that for sure. Apparently that mod takes away a lot of the sag and increases the responsiveness and dynamic.

It does help a little. Makes it a little more aggressive, less headroom as well. I ran mine with a 5V4 which is between a 5y3 and 5ar4.

Docs 1x12 caba are terrific. I personally like closed back cabs for the thump and punch they tend to give to the low end, especially with an alnico speaker.
if you are thinking of something out of the Z camp, then i cannot recommend enough the Port City 1x12 oversized wave cab. Stunning...
i run my m12 through that cab with a gold and could not be happier.

New guy here. My first post so I hope it's ok to say. In my M12, I just swapped the EH EL84's for a set of NOS Russian 6N14N-EB 7189A / EL84M from Doug's Tubes. The amp seems to sound more lively and punchy. I'm using a 112 open back cab with a Cannabis Rex. I just ordered a 5ar4 and will see how that works.

I would say the m12 has some very similar qualities of the z wreck. Especially when paired with a wampler paisley drive. I love the low setting with a tele. Bass at 1, treble at 9, and volume at 2.

One thing I never tried was the m12 through my open back z 2x12 cab. Hmmm....

And I've yet to play a wreck but from the sound clips this is the impression I got as well. Put a different 5ar4 rec tube in and it gets a little closer. Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards

I had several spare rec tubes laying around when I had the M12. A nos 5v4, which I used most often because was in between stock and a 5ar4. And a sovtek 5ar4 which made the M12 quite a bit louder, less headroom, and more aggressive overall.

<Edit> I need something lower wattage that's like the stangray. <Edit> I agree with jesslm02 regarding the Rx Jr doing a good impersonation of the Stangray. I have both the Rx Jr and Stangray and can dial in the Rx Jr to sound very similar to the Ray. The Rx Jr is a lower wattage alternative to the Ray; with a PPI master volume to boot. I only played a M12 once so can't really comment on the tone beyond I liked what I heard, but not enough to compare the tone with other amps.
