So I'm thinking about adding another head to my rig, initially as a backup, but now I'm thinking of running 2 at times, or all of the time. (See backup amp thread in Lounge) Currently I have a 25th Ghia with 2 Z-convertible cabs, 1x12 (gold) and 2x10 (doc's speakers) that I split with a PCNS Y cable. Does, or has anyone run another amp/cab alongside the ghia? If so, what's your setup? Here's my initial thinking - Cheaper options: Vox Night Train, Orange Micro/Tiny Terror or Orange OR15, Hughes & Kettner Tubemaster 18 or ?
- Dr.Z - Z28, Remedy, Maz Jr/Sr, or?
I got the 25th because I like the MV and don't like carrying an attenuator around. This is what is keeping me from the Z28, non-25th Ghia. Remedy has the 6l6's and the option of more power if/when I need it, as well as the Maz Sr. Maz Jr could be a good option.
I would either run both amps at the same time in stereo, or use switcher to use one or the other.

Not trying to be critical here...but...
You don't like carrying an attenuator around....but you'll carry around a second head?
Personally, I'd skip the second head and use a pedal for whatever sound the Ghia doesn't give you. I've never been one for dual heads. Too much hassle.

You can use the 25'th Ghia for cleans and a Master volume Remedy for dirt. Both will sound good through the Gold and the master volumes will allow you to get your tone at any volume. I am not sure about the Remedy through the 2x10 as I have never tried it. You can use a Radial Headbone to run 2 amps into 1 cab. I have one that I am not using if you are interested. Send me a PM.
I agree with John as well. Carrying a second head and all the extra cabling is a lot of work. You will be able to recover very quick if one of the heads should fail. If you play big shows, that second Z is worth it.

I love the sound of two amps at once. No switching, just both on all the time.
I like one kinda clean and one kinda dirty.
For many years my Ghia was always one of them. If I needed more volume I'd pair it with a Tweed Bassman or a 70's Sound City and run it as the dirty one.
Less volume I'd pair it with an Ampeg Mercury, Gibson Invader or THD Univalve and run it clean.
It's a few more things to haul. One amp and one cable. And sound guys never want to mic both. But it sounds fantastic.

Keep in mind the "master" on the MAZ amps is a little different than those on the 25 Anniv. Ghia and Remedy. If I'm not mistaken, the "master" on the MAZ amps is pre-phase-inverter and therefore changes the gain noticeably as you roll it up and/or down... which is much less so the case on the post-phase-inverter "masters" on the Ghia and Remedy.

Sorry, I already carry the Ghia and 2 cabs, adding another smaller head wouldn't be a big deal for me. But I don't really care to use the extra attenuator/cables.
I would more than likely use both at the same time, maybe Ghia with the 2x10s and other (Remedy) with the 12.
Excellent point, Mark, about the MV and pre/post phase inverter. I had not thought about that.

When adding a second amp it doesn't take much to get a lot louder. I like the Ghia/MAZ 8 combo. Both on all the time of course.

Like a lot of people I'm excited to try the new Therapy.
Based on nothing more then the idea that it's based on a tweed twin I bet it would sound great paired with the Ghia.
But that's all pretty much just wild guessing on my part as I've not heard it yet.
I do like the other amp to be about half the power of the Ghia (12 or watts like my Ampeg or Gibson) or twice as much like my Bassman and Sound City at 50ish watts.
But that's with amps with no master volumes.
If I had to pick one direction it would be to get a bigger amp to pair with the Ghia. You can tame volume but you can't squeeze more out when you need it. I've run out of volume with the Ghia more then once.
I tend to run my amps on the clean side so I'm not getting as much volume from them as someone who cranks both.

I'm using the Ghia with the Monza w/MV in an ABY setup = real nice clark. I agree with RoscoeNYC about getting loud real quick with two amps, Fo SHO. The Monza's test tube baby name was Ghia GT, and it does work with it as though some what related...kissin' cousin i thinks

Decided to go with a Remedy. A blonde 2013 w/MV & EQ bypass went up in BST (thanks gplayer1965!) and I had to snatch it up.
