Just bought a used Ghia combo. It's a 1x10 with Red Fang. Got it for $875, so I think I got a nice deal! If the guy that sold it is on this forum, THANK YOU! lol Can't wait to rip it up on a Ghia again. I should have kept my Ghia I sold 2 years ago. Graduated to the Maz and then on to the M12 but I always missed the Ghia. I'll post pics when she arrives! In the Z family again!

Nice! Make sure it's got a good 12AX7 in the first tube position, and a real-deal 5751 in the second spot. I'm glad I did...

Welcome home !! Killer deal. Right now there are some crazy low prices around for Ghia heads and I just want to start collecting them like J Mascis does Big Muffs. You made the right move.

I wanted a head BADLY, but I figured at the price for the combo, I'd be better served since I'd have to shell out a few hundred for a decent cab. This way I can enjoy the Ghia at a great price without the extra expense of a cab.

I tend to gravitate towards Tung sols or Mullard in new production stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong, but do the Ghias come stock with a NOS 5751? I think my original Ghia shipped with a NOS 5751, or at least something NOS I can't remember for sure though...

NOS 5751 is the ONLY way to go as Myles(tube genius) from the forum has informed us that modern 5751's are just 12ax7's that didn't meet the grade. I've always just ran regular old JJ"s everywhere else and then bought whatever NOS 5751 I come by and what ever Rectifier .... I have not yet 'looked' for special kinda of tone from a tube. Maybe as the years go by I'll start looking there, but I've just been exploring guitars, pickups, speakers, effects, and volume and tone adjustments. Two years into the relationship and I'm still being wowed by the Ghia as well as getting deeper into the understanding of what she's looking for to give me what I'm looking for.

They seem to be coming new from the factory with a 12AX7 in V2 nowadays, probably 'cause the Doc can't get real 5751's at any decent price or quantity (I'm only buying 1 at a time, but Doc's building hundreds of these things). I think the limited run of 50 mini-Ghia's had NOS tubes, though. PS. I've heard good stuff about the Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7.. that might be good in V1. As for the 5751, I'd be inclined to go with any legitimate NOS specimen from a reputable dealer.

I just remember one of the tubes in the first Ghia I had looked older and nothing like a new tube. From the website: Carmen Ghia: V1: JJ ECC83S, V2: NOS 5751, V3/4 JJ EL84 (matched pair), V5: NOS 5Y3

Dude; welcome back! I recently picked up the other 1x10 Ghia on flesBay Yeah; JJ ECC83 in v1, NOS 5751 in v2, fresh matched pr. JJs, and an NOS 5Y3 and you're golden. I popped in a G10 Greenback I've had for a while and I'm back home too!

Nice looking!
I prefer the tone at 11:30. (But that's with tele, don't know what you're using.)
I'll be curious to find out what you think of the 10" Red Fang. Couldn't replace mine fast enough.

I had the fang in a 1x10 cab and it was brittle and harsh. This one is the Z labeled fang is it the same thing? I might go for a Greenback.

I believe they are the same thing. Brittle is not a word often used with the 10" fang. Perhaps it wasn't broken in?
The amount of volume drop from a 10" fang to a 10" greenback will be huge.

When I say brittle I mean stiff and clangy. The high end is in your face. I love the ghia though and am soooo glad to own a Z again

So I'm still not quite digging the fang. I don't know quite how to best describe it...in your face is a good term. I think if I remember correctly, I had the same thought on the fang when I had my previous Ghia. I'm thinking about going for the Greenback or Gold again. I just don't have the coin for the gold right now.
Other experiments I plan to try this weekend are A) putting an RCA 5751 from '86 in V1 and V2 to see the differences, and B) plugging into a 1x12 cab of my friends. I'm really loving the size of the 1x10, but you can certainly tell it is a 1x10 IMO and I think a 1x12 cab would fill it out in the low end.

If you haven't read enough of my raving....I LOVE the 10" gold in my Ghia. But I'm going for that country tele tone.

If you haven't read enough of my raving....I LOVE the 10" gold in my Ghia. But I'm going for that country tele tone. I'm going for a bluesy "Plexi-like" tone. I like a really woody tone with full cleans, but with some glassy high end. The Ghia is perfect in just about every way for me so the speaker choice really isn't a big deal at the moment. I love the sound of the Ghia regardless of the speaker and can shape up the tone I want with the tone knob pretty easily. I think to my ear, I'd prefer a bigger cab and 12" speaker than a speaker swap alone.

Changing tubes, adjusting eq, different cables, stomp boxes, etc. all have an effect, but the speaker has a much larger effect than all of those combined.

Just in no rush as I don't think the Ghia sounds bad at all, just some minor things I don't care for in the Fang. But, rather than spend money on a speaker right now, I'm considering picking up a 1x12 cab to run with it

The wife complained immediately about the volume though.

I thought I would miss a 12" speaker for the fullness. The 10" Red Fang is pretty impressive in the Ghia.
