i'm been searching on this topic, but haven't found the answer, so please forgive me if it has already been addressed
the maz 38 is the "older" model, and was bought because of the unbelievable clean.. but the overdrive is shrill-gritty, and not smooth..
i'd like to not have to use pedals...any tubes suggestions??

Is this a Maz 38 senior? If it is, turning down the cut and treble should help. Might be the speaker? A Z amp will make it very apparent if the guitar's pickups aren't smooth sounding.

Depends on the speaker, guitar, tubes, pedals, the interplay between the Volume and Master settings (one's pre drive, one's power drive), etc.
You might try rolling the volume down to 11:00 and the master to 3:00. Will add more mid and take out some of the scooped/buzz drive (pre drive seems to be more present/buzzy; power drive seems smoother/warmer).
Putting in a hotter power tube (like a 4 rather than a 6) can warm things up.
Different Preamp tubes can make a difference...if they're old they can get harsh. Or, if they're new, a different grade or mfg might work.
If it has a G12H30, swapping it out for a V30, Greenback, Alnico Blue (or silver - both Weber), Blue or Silver Weber Ceramic, will help cut the harsh top end.
Might experiment with the treble between 10-1:00 and the Cut between 9:00-11:00.
Might also try cranking the Cut to 2-3:00 (gets a really smooth gainy rock edge when cranked vs. the smooth blues tones when around 9:00-11:00). Experiment a bit...
If you're hitting the amp with a drive pedal, try the pedal tone around 11:00 (generic thought, but might work). Also try rolling the treble on the guitar back a couple numbers...like 7-8.
Gads...can go on and on and on. :-) There are so many things...heck, even bad power can make a superbly toneful amp sound harsh.

thanks for the responses...
the specific problem is with the pre-amp gain....the amp's overdrive is not smooth...
yes, it is not boogie, but the overdrive is just not musical..littel gain or a lot, it doesn't matter.... and this is independent of guitar-type or cabinet
my goal would be to have some "hair" with the guitar volume at ten, that cleans up with rolling off the guitar volume...
turnign down the treble doesn't really do it, and then the amp loses some sparkle
so i am hoping for pre-amp tube suggestions for smoother overdrive
thanks again for helping

geddyentwistle, What tubes, both pre-amp and outputs, do you have in the amp now? When you say "Older" Maz is it a senior or Invasion or Studio. Thanks, Rick
